GAMBIER, Ohio, January 17. SWIMMING with a split squad Friday afternoon, part of the Kenyon College Lords swimming and diving team defeated Oberlin College at home. The other part of the team was defeated by some stiff Division I competition in Oxford, Ohio.<\/p>\n
Those Lords swimmers who stayed home managed to construct a 108-88 win over the Yeomen, Kenyon's seventh of the season. Those Lords who hit the road absorbed the team\u2019s first two losses. Kenyon (7-2) dropped tight meets to Miami University, 123-114, and to the University of Cincinnati, 107-98. <\/p>\n
Coach Jim Steen's charges have won an incredible 25-consecutive NCAA DIII Championships and will be aiming for No. 26 in about eight weeks. Their women have won EVERY DIII women's crown save for three.<\/p>\n
Against Oberlin, the Lords used their depth to capture first-place finishes in seven of the 12 events that were swum. Six different Kenyon swimmers won individual events, while the Lords rounded out their win total with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.62). <\/p>\n
The Lords\u2019 individual winners included Chris D\u2019Ardenne (Roswell, GA\/Roswell) in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.92); Chris Lohr (Norvelt, PA\/Mt. Pleasant Area) in the 50-yard freestyle (22.67); Eduardo Rodriguez (Sao Paulo, Brazil\/Colegio Luiz de Queiroz) in the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.06); Lain Shakespeare (Atlanta, GA\/Pace Academy) in the 100-yard butterfly (54.75); Josh Mitchell (Iron Mountain, MI\/Kingsford) in the 100-yard freestyle; and Dewey Foley (Birmingham, MI\/Cranbrook Kingswood) in the 100-yard backstroke (57.02). <\/p>\n
In Oxford, senior standout Elliot Rushton (Delta, BC, Canada\/S. Delta Secondary) tried to carry the Lords to victory on his own. Rushton turned in winning times in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.95), the 500-yard freestyle (4:33.28), and the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:27.13). <\/p>\n
Rushton was not alone, however. The Lords received reinforcements in the form of a pair of second-place finishes from Jimmy Berger (Mansfield, OH\/St. Peter\u2019s) and Joey Gosselar (Holland, MI\/West Ottawa). Berger clocked in at 47.72 in the 100-yard freestyle, while Gosselar went 2:08.47 in the 200-yard breaststroke. Andrejs Duda (Jelgava, Latvia\/Jelgava No. 4) returned to action and took third place in the 200-yard individual medley and freshman Perry Bullock (Millbrook, NY\/Cardinal Gibbons) added another third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.14).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
