NEW ORLEANS, LA, January 15. ON the heels of winning the UNO\/NOKIA Sugar Bowl Invitational and claiming a dual-meet victory over North Texas over the weekend, the Tulane University swimming and diving team made a clean sweep of Conference USA honors as freshmen Samantha Berdine and Danielle Carrillo were named league Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, reported the school.<\/p>\n
The weekly honor was the first of Berdine\u2019s career while Carrillo was named Diver of the Week for the second time during the 2004-05 season. A Tulane student-athlete has now won Swimmer of the Week three times this year, four dating back to last season, and Diver of the Week twice.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a tremendous honor for both Samantha and Danielle,\u201d head coach Daniella Irle said. \u201cThis couldn\u2019t have gone to a more deserving swimmer. Samantha works hard every day and is so committed to this program and her personal excellence. But the big thing with her is that she\u2019s a consummate team player and does what she can to help the team win.<\/p>\n
\u201cDanielle has been developing and getting better each week. She\u2019s learned what it takes to dive at this level, and it\u2019s nice to see her efforts rewarded with an honor like this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Berdine, who was named Female Swimmer of the Meet at the Sugar Bowl Invite, posted four victories, a pair of third-place finishes and a fifth place showing to account for 72 individual points and 108 relay points as the Green Wave claimed the title by a 536.5-point margin.<\/p>\n
Her best day of the two-day event was Saturday when she won the 200 free (1:55.04) and the 400 IM (4:36.07) while swimming the leadoff leg of Tulane\u2019s winning 800 free relay (7:48.20\/1:54.94 split) and anchoring the Green Wave\u2019s victorious 400 free relay team (3:37.38\/53.04 split). The 800 free relay team set a Lakefront Arena Aquatic Center pool record, eclipsing the former mark set by LSU back in 1986.<\/p>\n
On Friday, she finished third in the 200 IM (2:12.50) and in the 500 free (5:10.15) while swimming the leadoff leg of the 200 free relay team (1:41.95\/25.65 split), which finished fifth.<\/p>\n
Carrillo, meanwhile, was instrumental in Tulane\u2019s 152-65 win over North Texas as she swept both diving events. A native of Kirkland, Wash., Carrillo posted a 232.57 in the one-meter springboard, and a 203.93 in the three-meter event. Her performance helped Tulane improve to 13-1 in dual meet action and extend its winning streak to 10.<\/p>\n
Berdine, Carrillo and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Cleveland, Miss., to take on Florida A&M, Rhodes College and host Delta State at noon. Following the trip to Mississippi, Tulane will close out its home schedule on Jan. 29 when it hosts Rice at 11 a.m. at the Reily Student Recreation Center Natatorium.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
