HONOLULU, HI, January 13, 2005. THE Wisconsin swimming and diving teams almost completed the full sweep at the Hawaii four-team meet Jan. 7-9 in Honolulu, Hawaii, per Badger reports. <\/p>\n
The women won all three of their dual meets, while the men won two of the three.<\/p>\n
The women, led by junior Anna Trinidad (Colorado Springs, Colo.), beat Texas A&M; 83-55, Hawaii; 81-59 and South Dakota; 124-16. The men, led by senior Eric Wiesner (Motrose, Colo.), beat Texas A&M; 89-49 and South Dakota; 116-24, while just falling short to Hawaii; 73-67.<\/p>\n
"The entire team swam great this weekend, and we are very pleased with how we improved during our time in Hawaii," said head coach Eric Hansen.<\/p>\n
Winning four events for the women, Trinidad led the team to the three victories. Trinidad placed first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.23), 200-yard backstroke (2:01.03), 200-yard IM (2:02.62) and was part of the first place 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:27.64).<\/p>\n
Like Trinidad, Wiesner also won four events to lead the men's team. Wiesner took first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:39.44), 50-yard freestyle (20.86), 100-yard freestyle (45.35) and was part of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team (3:02.10).<\/p>\n
Five other swimmers also took first in individual events. Adam Mania (Hickman, Neb.) won both the 100-yard breaststroke (56.87) and the 100-yard butterfly (49.97). Tim Liebhold (Chapel Hill, N.C.) won the 200-yard IM (1:52.00), Tom Molzahn (Barrington, Ill.) took first in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.39), Carly Piper (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) won the 1000-yard freestyle (10:00.87) as well as the 500-yard freestyle (4:56.51) and Amalia Sarnecki (Ann arbor, Mich.) won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.14) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.39).<\/p>\n
In diving, the men were led by Justin Bonner (Ridley Park, Pa.) taking fourth on the 1-meter board (233.45), seventh on the 3-meter board (381.90) and third on the platform (319.90). The women were led by Cassie Kubly (Middleton, Wis.) placing fifth on the 1-meter board (220.40), ninth on the 3-meter board (401.65), and third on the platform (340.65). Junior Amanda Witte (LaGrange, Ill.), who took first on each board last year, was unable to compete due to a foot injury.<\/p>\n
"Justin (Bonner) was really consistent this weekend," said head diving
\ncoach Josh Seykora. "He has really improved over the time spent training in Hawaii, and continues to improve every meet."<\/p>\n
Leading the Hawaii men to victory over Wisconsin was junior Thomas
\nWinkler winning the 100-yard backstroke (49.45) and the 200-yard
\nbackstroke (1:49.21)<\/p>\n
The Badgers will be in action next at the Big Ten Quad Dual meet in West Lafayette, Ind. Jan. 28-29.<\/p>\n
