DALLAS, TX, January 10, 2005. THE top-ranked Georgia women\u00b9s swimming and diving team capped a winning weekend with a 162.5-129.5 victory against No. 6 Southern Methodist Saturday afternoon at Perkins Natatorium in Dallas, per Georgia reports.<\/p>\n
The win was the 24th consecutive dual-meet victory for the Georgia women, as the team\u00b9s last loss came at Florida in November 2002. The Lady Bulldogs (7-0, 3-0 SEC) were coming off a 131-94 win against conference opponent Alabama Friday afternoon in Athens.<\/p>\n
\u00b3We could not have been more proud of our ladies today,\u00b2 said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. \u00b3I think meets like this show a true sign of character, and we certainly have character. We were real, real tired, and I think SMU was tired too. (SMU) is a terrific team, and after a win yesterday against Alabama in Athens, this was a job well done by our team.\u00b2<\/p>\n
Junior Mary DeScenza finished first in three events and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay. The Naperville, Ill., native stopped the clock in 1:47.20 to win the 200-yard freestyle, and she returned to the pool to take top honors in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.30. Although the 200-yard individual medley was exhibitioned by Georgia, DeScenza posted the fastest time in the event at 2:01.62.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Kara Lynn Joyce won a pair of events, as she touched first in 23.01 to win the 50-yard freestyle and took the 100-yard freestyle in 50.75.<\/p>\n
Other individual event winners include Sarah Poewe in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.78) and Lindsey Ertter in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.55). Elizabeth Hill led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard butterfly, as she stopped the clock in 1:59.60 to win the event. Katie Yevak and Beth Grams finished second and third, respectively.<\/p>\n
\u00b3Lindsey Ertter was terrific,\u00b2 added Bauerle. \u00b3Mary DeScenza, Kara Lynn, and freshman Elizabeth Hill did a great job as well. Mary was probably the swimmer of the meet by winning three events. We got some great swims from some of our second-line people. Beth Grams and Haley Chura posted some of their best times ever.\u00b2<\/p>\n
Junior Laura Conway was the top Georgia finisher in the 1000-yard freestyle, as she finished second with a time of 9:59.23. Freshman Erin Forster posted a pair of third-place finishes in the backstroke events. Haley Chura finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:59.92. <\/p>\n
The diving events were contested earlier in the week, as the Mustangs competed at the Georgia Diving Invitational in Athens, and those results were used in the scoring of Saturday\u00b9s meet. Georgia\u00b9s Emily Hunter won the 3-meter springboard contest with an overall score of 454.85. Senior Brooke Bassham finished second on both the 1-meter (231.15) and 3-meter (440.65).<\/p>\n
\u00b3This win is a real feather in the cap for our ladies,\u00b2 offered Bauerle. \u00b3This meet was not real pretty, but it was one of those meets that was just about racing and beating people. Those are fun meets.\u00b2<\/p>\n
Georgia will return to action on Friday, Jan. 15, as the men and women face national powerhouse Texas. The Bulldogs are slated to begin at 11 am followed by the Lady Bulldogs at 2 pm.<\/p>\n
