The Stanford men&#39;s swimming and diving team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 136-102 victory Friday over ninth-ranked Michigan at the Avery Aquatic Center, reported the Cardinal.<\/p>\n<p>The Cardinal opened the dual meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 400 yard medley relay. Hongzhe Sun, Gary Marshall, Matt McDonald and Ben Wildman-Tobriner took top honors, clocking in with a season-best time of 3:14.77. The relay squad of Tobias Oriwol, Ricky Eddy, Peter Carothers and Matt Crowe placed second, touching the wall at 3:22.98. Thomas Brown, Karl Boehringer, Mark Stephens and Egan Gans finished third posting a time of 3:31.72.<\/p>\n<p>The first individual event of the meet &#8211; the 1000 yard freestyle &#8211; was won by Cardinal Shaun Phillips who won in a season-best time of 9:12.02. He was followed by Michigan&#39;s Brendan Neligan (9:15.91) and Alex Vanderkaay (9:22.24). <\/p>\n<p>U.S. Olympian Peter Vanderkaay controlled the 200 freestyle for the Wolverines, taking the lead on the third 50 from Stanford\u2019s Andy Grant, touching at 1:36.15.  Stanford finished 2-3 with sophomore Grant second in a season-best 1:37.27 and Jayme Cramer third in 1:38.10. <\/p>\n<p>The Cardinal finished 1-2 in the 50 yard freestyle with Ben Wildman-Tobriner, taking top honors, in a season-best time of 20.26. He was followed by teammate Kyle Ransom whose time of 20.70 was also a season-best. <\/p>\n<p>Junior Tobias Oriwol won the 200 yard IM in a season-best time of 1:47.98. Michigan&#39;s Chris DeJong took second (1:48.57) while Stanford sophomore Hongzhe Sun finished third (1:49.14). <\/p>\n<p>In the men&#39;s one-meter diving, senior Jesse Fonner placed first (342.67), followed by teammates Kevin McLean (297.92) and Jeff Durbin (292.77).<\/p>\n<p>The next event was the 200 yard butterfly where senior Matt McDonald built a big early lead (:50.46) and posted a season-best time of 1:45.91 to win the event. Michigan&#39;s Davis Tarwater was second in 1:46.03, after trailing by 1.72 at the midway point, while senior Jayme Cramer placed third (1:46.14). <\/p>\n<p>The 100 yard free was won by Wolverine Peter Vanderkaay in a time of 44.35. Sophomore Kyle Ransom took second in a season-best 45.16 while teammate Andy Grant clocked in at 45.25 to finish third.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan\u2019s Chris DeJong added a 200 back win at 1:44.23. Cardinal Hongzhe Sun, an Olympic Trials finalist in this event along with DeJong, led :51.52 to :51.68 at the hundred but finished second in 1:45.24, followed by Cardinal teammate Tobias Oriwol (1:46.63). <\/p>\n<p>Daniel Beal, a Stanford freshman from Santa Barbara, was victorious in the 500 yard freestyle, posting a season-best of 4:26.39. Sophomore Shaun Phillips placed second in 4:27.40, followed by Michigan&#39;s Andrew Hurd (4:27.73).<\/p>\n<p>Senior diver Jesse Fonner once again took top honors in the three-meter diving event with a score of 263.25. Cardinal freshman Nathan Kim was second (243.90), followed by Wolverine Jake Boehm (240.60). <\/p>\n<p>Stanford scored enough points by the 200 breaststroke to enter all its swimmers exhibition   Christian Vanderkaay got the official victory for Michigan at 2:04.44, but Stanford senior Gary Marshall turned in the top time in the 200 yard breaststroke, clocking in at 2:01.81. He was followed by teammate Nick Wolfe&#39;s 2:02.22.<\/p>\n<p>In the final event of the meet, Michigan&#39;s relay team took first in the 400 yard free relay in a time of 2:59.08 (DeJong, :45.22; Tarwater, :44.68; Hurd, :45.16, P. Vanderkaay, :44.00). Stanford\u2019s exhibition crew of Ben Wildman-Tobriner (:44.88), Jayme Cramer, Kyle Ransom and Andy Grant turned in the second-fastest time of the day at 2:59.54.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford is back in action next week on Saturday, January 15 in a dual meet against Pacific at 11 a.m. at the Avery Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Palo Alto, CA, January 8.
