EAST MEADOW, NY, December 8. THE U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's swimming and diving team reported it took home its second straight fifth place finish at the ECAC Division III Swimming and Diving Championships December 3-5, 2004. <\/p>\n
The USMM Academy women placed eighth. There were one male and one female DIII \u201cA\u201d standards performed.<\/p>\n
MEN
\nFreshman Jay Carpenter was name the Male Swimmer of the Meet after winning four individual events, two of which qualified for the NCAA Championships in March. Carpenter won the 200-yard IM in a meet record 1:53.19. That time was 0.30 seconds below the NCAA automatic cut time of 1:53.49 and set a new school record by 4.47 seconds. He finished the 100-yard butterfly in 51.31 seconds, giving him an NCAA "B" cut, on Saturday. He also won the 100-yard backstroke in 53.10 seconds and the 100-yard freestyle in 47.00 seconds. <\/p>\n
Matt Ellison took home a second place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17:08.83, a fourth place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.31), a sixth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.77) and a 10th place finish in the 400-yard IM (4:30.89). <\/p>\n
Dave Ramseur also placed well individually, finishing in fifth place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:02.15) and finished seventh in the 100-yard backstroke (56.17). <\/p>\n
Teammates Jeffrey Boden, who placed 12th (49.76) in the 100-yard freestyle and 15th (22.70) in the 50-yard freestyle, Ed Reppond, who finished 15th (2:11.27) in the 200-yard butterfly, and Mark Jimenez, who was 15th (2:22.51) in the 200-yard breaststroke, also swam well for the Mariners. As did Jared Swan and William Ansell, who tied for 12th in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.60 seconds, and Stuart Whitaker, who placed 13th (2:06.85) in the 200-yard IM. <\/p>\n
Brendan Kruse placed sixth (295.50 points) on the one-meter diving board and was seventh (272.05 points) on the three meter board.
\nKings Point's relay teams had five top-10 finished, four of which were in the top-five. <\/p>\n
WOMEN
\nErika Norris of New York University had the only swim that met the DIII automatic standard, completing the 200 fly at 2:07.62.<\/p>\n
The Merchant Marine women were lead by freshman standout Robyn Jimenez, who placed 13th in the 200-yard individual medley and was a key contributor to the Mariners relay teams. <\/p>\n
The Mariners placed eighth in both the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Morgan Evans, Jimenez, Kim Sercel and Krista Smith finished the medley relay in 4:34.04 and finished the freestyle relay in 4:04.20. <\/p>\n
Jimenez finished the 200-yard IM in 2:22.74 in her lone individual event of the day. She placed fifth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:34.56) on Friday and took home a fifth place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.92) and a 13th place finish in the 400-yard IM (5:00.59) on Saturday. <\/p>\n
Sercel placed 16th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.94) on Saturday for her top individual finish of the Championships. <\/p>\n
On the one-meter diving board Marlaina Pippen placed ninth (245.35), while Sarah Christensen placed 14th (196.50) and Jackie Peterson finished 16th (166.25). Christensen placed 13th (185.95) on the three meter board while Peterson placed 14th (163.80). <\/p>\n
The 200-yard medley relay team placed sixth (2:00.45) while the 200-yard freestyle team placed seventh (1:49.65) and the 800-yard freestyle team finished eighth (9:31.13). <\/p>\n
The Blue and Gray men and women both return to action on December 10 when they travel to Queens with Baruch for a dual meet at 6:00 p.m.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
