LOS ANGELES \u2013 November 21. THE No. 5 Arizona women's swimming and diving team defeated No. 12 USC, 186-113 Friday at the McDonald\u2019s Swim Stadium, while the No. 2 USC men, No. 6 Wildcat men and No. 19 Arizona State men completed the first day of a two-day meet, per Trojan and Wildcat reports.<\/p>\n
The Arizona women won 11 out of 16 events, including the first five, starting with the 400y medley relay team of junior Jenna Gresdal, junior Erin Sieper, sophomore Whitney Myers and freshman Courtney Cashion with a time of 4:43.49. The Wildcats swept the relays, later adding the 4 x 50 freestyle with a 1:34.60 win by Jessica Hayes, Cashion, Emily Mason and Lacey Nymeyer.<\/p>\n
SC\u2019s five wins came from just three sources. Freshman Emily Goetsch won both flys, while junior diver Blythe Hartley swept the diving events. Senior co-captain Joanna Fargus added the 200y back.<\/p>\n
UofA also had three double winners, including senior Emily Mason in distance freestyle events, 10:00.2 and 4:53.34 in the 1000 and 500, respectively. Wildcat Erin Sieper won both the 100y (1:03.52) and 200y (2:16.64) breaststroke, edging sister Kristina Sieper, a Trojan, both times. Arizona\u2019s Jenna Gresdal took first-place in two events, the 100y backstroke (54.75) and the 50y free (23.49). <\/p>\n
In the 200y free, Wildcat senior Jessica Hayes won with a time of 1:50.64, while freshman teammates Lacey Nymeyer took the top spot in the 100y free at 51.03 and Whitney Meyers the top 400 IM position in 4:18.89.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a great effort by everyone today,\u201d said head coach Frank Busch. \u201cAll the girls pulled through and had an overall good team performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arizona's men's team leads the No. 2 Trojan men, 92-75, halfway through a two-day meet while the USC men are ahead of the Sun Devils, 133-31. The first day of the men\u2019s competition was littered with outstanding performances. <\/p>\n
The Wildcats won six out of nine events including the 200y free relay team of Lyndon Ferns (:19.94), Simon Burnett, Byron Jeffers and Jonas Persson, winning with a time of 1:19.96. (The attached results list a different set of Wildcats with this time but when comparing the swims of these Wildcats in the meet it is apparent the results list the wrong names.)<\/b><\/p>\n
The Wildcats were also leaders in the 4 x 100 medley relay at 3:14.82 (Nick Thoman – :49.16; Ivan Barnes – :55.29; Lyndon Ferns – :47.16; Simon Burnett – :43.21) <\/p>\n
Other top swims for the men on day one included Ferns at :43.59 in the 100 freestyle and :47.25 in the 100 fly. Burnett picked up a good win in the 200 back at 1:46.56.<\/p>\n
Trojan Ous Mellouli, world champion at short course 400 meters IM for Tunisia, had quite a day. He was a one-man wrecking crew, keeping the Trojans close to the Wildcats. He won the 500 (4:22.00), 400 IM (3:49.88), was second in the 200 breast behind Wildcat Ivan Barnes, 2:01.22 to 2:01.39 and, finally, lead off the Trojan \u201cB\u201d 4 x 100 medley relay with a :50.01 100 backstroke.<\/p>\n
\t\u201cThe men are really dominating all the events right now,\u201d said Busch, \u201cThey will have to come back tomorrow and be really aggressive to win this meet.\u201d<\/p>\n
The men conclude their competition with UofA, USC and ASU Saturday at the McDonald's Swim Stadium, while the UofA women head to Westwood, Calif., to take on the UCLA Bruins. at the Men\u2019s Gym Pool with diving at the Sunset Recreation Center. USC's women's team hosts No. 19 ASU on Saturday while the three men's teams conclude competition in their two-day affair.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
