COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., November 12. THE U.S. Olympic Committee today named swimmers Kaitlin Sandeno and Brendan Hansen as the October Athletes of the Month. <\/p>\n
Sandeno (Lake Forest, Calif.) won four gold medals at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 7-11, capturing three of the four gold medals on the first day of competition. Sandeno swam a total of six races on Oct. 7, winning her first gold of the evening in the 200m butterfly. She then came back 45 minutes later to claim first place in the 400m individual medley in American-record time, a full three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. <\/p>\n
She capped off the night by anchoring Team USA's 4x200m freestyle relay, which set the U.S. Open record for the fastest time on U.S. soil. Two days later, she earned her fourth gold of the meet in the 400m free, outdistancing the field by three seconds.<\/p>\n
Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) was named Male Swimmer of the Meet at the FINA Short Course World Championships in Indianapolis, Ind., after sweeping the breaststroke events and claiming gold in the world record-breaking 400m medley relay. Hansen became the first swimmer to sweep the three breaststroke events at a World Championship event. The University of Texas graduate started the meet with a victory in the 100m breast, his first Short Course World title. <\/p>\n
The next day, he won the 200m breaststroke in Championship-record time, outpacing his closest competitor by almost four seconds. Two days later, he cruised to victory in the 50m breast and came back 90 minutes later to help Team USA dominate the rest of the field in the 400m medley relay.
