GREAT Britain’s Masters swimmers showed their class in Sheffield as two world, eight European and 13 British records fell on day one of the ASA Masters Championships at Ponds Forge.

World records were taken by David Cumming of Eastbourne and Rachel Barton of Aquabears.

Sixty-six-year-old David Cumming took the world standard for the men’s 200m butterfly (65/69 years) below the three-minute mark as he recorded a time of 2:59.62 seconds. He was a second clear of the previous record of 3:00.83 seconds held by South African David Mclachlan.

Rochdale-based swimmer Rachel Barton evened the tally for the ladies, lowering her own world standard in the 55/59 years 50m backstroke. She shaved 0.15 seconds off her previous best with a time of 35 seconds flat. She sealed the masters title with ease, finishing ahead of Lynne Tanner of Witney who clocked 39.25 seconds and Winchester’s Helen Trippe who took bronze in 39.94 seconds.

World Masters champion Lesley Wilde picked up two masters titles in European records times in the women’s 50m back and 200m individual medley in 33.84 and 2:39.26 seconds respectively.

Records broken on day one of the ASA Masters Championships are below:
WR*
David Cumming (Eastbourne) Men’s 200m fly 65/69yrs 2:59.62
Rachel Barton (Aquabears) Women’s 50m back 55/59yrs 35.00

ER1
Margaret Smith (City of Milton Keynes) Women’s 200m fly 45/49yrs 2:38.18
Judy Wilson (FHM Birmingham) Women’s 200m fly 60/64yrs 3:07.04
Derek Parr (Otter) Men’s 200m fly 60/64yrs 2:42.80
Lesley Wilde (Holywell) Women’s 50m back 45/49yrs 33.84
Lesley Wilde (Holywell) Women’s 200m IM 45/49yrs 2:39.76
Simon Veale (Totnes) Men’s 200m IM 45/49yrs 2:19.26

BR
Harold Dodd (Trafford Metropolitan) Men’s 1500m free 85/89yrs 34:20.91
Nuala Muir-Cochrane (Camden Swiss) Women’s 1500m free 40/44yrs 17:52.93
Verity Dobbie (Hadrian Masters) Women’s 1500m free 45/49yrs 20:14.12
Jonathan Audis (Marlborough) Men’s 50m back 19/24yrs 27.17
Christopher Brown (City of Bradford) Men’s 50m back 50/54yrs 30.74
Andi Manley (Marlborough) Men’s 200m IM 25/29yrs 2:05.66

* World records are also European and British records and are subject to ratification
1 European records also stand as British records and are subject to ratification

DAY TWO: Judy Wilson Snags A Trio of World Marks

October 30.
