HOUSTON, TX TRUE freshman Brittany Massengale set a new school record in the 1,000-freestyle to highlight three individual Rice wins and a sweep of both relays as the Owls claimed the team title of their annual home fall meet on Saturday afternoon, The Hilton Plaza\/TYR Rice Invitational.<\/p>\n
Rice reported their squad posted a team score of 547 points to win the four-team, two day meet. Western Athletic Conference rival Nevada finished second (522 points) in the final standings followed by TCU (460) and Colorado State (424).<\/p>\n
After the Owls opened the competition with a win in the 200-yard medley relay behind a season-best time of 1:47.44, Massengale won the 1,000-yard freestyle over a field of 12 competitors with a new school record time of 9:59.04.<\/p>\n
The standout from Alma, Ark., broke the four-year old Rice record of Kaite Scholl (10:01.66) with a steady second half of the race (5:00.88) that was almost as fast has her first 500 (4:58.12). The 1,000 is not an event at the NCAA championships, but Massengale already provisionally qualified for the NCAAs in the 500-free last week at SMU in the second meet of her college career.<\/p>\n
Another Rice true freshman, Carey Hain followed suit and made it three wins in a row by taking the next event, the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.92). Senior teammate Urska Ros finished second to give the Blue and Gray a 1-2 finish and Ros came back two events later to win the 200-butterfly (2:06.02).<\/p>\n
Junior sprinter Laura Healy placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and then swam a spirited anchor leg to give the Owls a hard-fought win over TCU in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a season-best time of 3:30.37. The home meet was the third-consecutive weekend of competition for the Rice swim team. The Owls will next be in action across town at the University of Houston Invitational on Nov. 19-21.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
