THE second day of an Atlantic Coast Conference quad meet at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center was a repeat of day one as Florida State racked up three wins on the men’s side and two from the ladies, with Maryland being the dominant women’s squad.

With the three wins, the men improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the ACC. The 24th-ranked Seminoles beat Virginia Tech 189.50-163.50, while taking down the hosts 188-162 and adding a 240-113 win over Maryland.

The No. 19 women took down No. 24 Virginia Tech 211-142 and beat the Yellow Jackets 243-110. FSU lost to No. 15 Maryland 228.50-124.50. FSU women’s mark improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.

Pool records fell in two events on day two. Gus Calado of Virginia Tech took down the 400 IM mark of Tennessee’s Casey Dauw at 3:57.11. Megan Knepper of Maryland broke the women’s 200 back standard at 2:01.69.

One of the best races of the day came in the women’s 100 butterfly which ended in a flat tie at :56.00, with Emily Breen of FSU and Marina Mulyayeva of Maryland sharing the honors.

“We had a great team effort from the men,” Harper said. “They came together under adversity, I’m proud of their efforts and I think they are better team today than they were two days ago. It was a back and fourth meet and we had some guys that really stepped up today. The sprinters did a great job and Paul Erben and Billy Jamerson in the 200 breaststroke swam inspired and really fired the team up.

Just like on Friday, the men’s team got a big boost during the sprints as the Seminoles took three of the top four spots. Taking top honors was rookie Ed Denton (Maidenhead, England) as he posted the top mark in the league this year with a winning 45.98. Junior Joel Roycik (Winter Park, Fla.) was right behind in third place (46.52), while sophomore Alex Kennon (Winter Haven, Fla.) touched in with a fourth-place 46.53.

Florida State followed the win in the 100 free with 1-3 finishes in two of the next three events. Senior Michael Averett (Dave, Fla.) posted a season-best 50.21 to take the 100 butterfly with fellow captain Roycik in third place at 51.57. Busting through with a career-best time of 2:03.88 to win the 200 breaststroke was sophomore Paul Erben (Panama City, Fla.) and freshman Billy Jamerson (Savannah, Ga.) followed with a third-place 2:06.65.

Putting all three of the men’s meets out of reach was the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay. The foursome of Brett Irvin (Boca Raton, Fla.), Kennon, Denton and Roycik posted the fastest time in the conference this year with their winning 3:04.56.

Giving the Seminoles a big boost was the women’s one-meter diving where Florida State took three of the top four spots. Senior captain Courtney McClow (Jacksonville, Fla.) won the event by 19 points (291.35) over sophomore teammate Brittany Lerew (Orlando, Fla.) and her 272.70. Sophomore Camille Akridge (Orlando, Fla.) took fourth at 237.25.
“To win five of the six meets was a great effort and I couldn’t ask for much more,” Harper added. “It was good shot in the arm for the team. Maryland has a great women’s team with good depth and our girls did what we wanted them to do and that was race with them. The divers felt better about the one meter and dove really well.”

Florida State is back in action on November 12 when it travels to south Florida to take on Miami and Indian River CC, followed by Florida International and Florida Atlantic the next day.

ATLANTA, GA, October 31.
