HOST Georgia Tech, Florida State, Maryland and Virginia Tech gathered here today, and will continue tomorrow, for an extravaganza of Atlantic Coast Conference swimming competition, a round-robin of dual meets that will harden each team for the remainder of their schedules.

According to reports received both through Florida State and through Maryland, the Seminoles are the leading men’s squad halfway through the meets, leading all three of the other teams, while Maryland likewise leads on the women’s side.

On the men’s side, the 24th-ranked Seminoles are leading Maryland 126-60, with a 94-89 margin over Georgia Tech and a 95.50-90.50 advantage over Georgia Tech.

The No. 19 Seminole women’s team is defeating the host Yellow Jackets 125-61, while beating No. 24 Virginia Tech 104-82. The Seminoles trail 14th-ranked Maryland 117-69.

“We’re off to a pretty good start,” FSU head coach Neil Harper said. “I think we’re where we thought we could be. Tomorrow we need to open the gap between the Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech in both meets and see if we can catch Maryland’s woman’s team. It’s a great atmosphere and a fun meet.”

Maryland women played havoc with the pool records at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center, gathering in four of them. Freshman Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.) broke the pool record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning the event with a time of 9:45.69. She also finished second in the 200-free in 1:50.95. Senior Marina Mulyayeva (Almaty, Kazakhstan) set a new pool mark in the 200-IM, winning the race with an NCAA `B' cut time of 2:04.17.

Both Maryland women’s relays also set pool records. The 200-free relay team of senior Megan Knepper (Williamsport, Md.), Mulyayeva, freshman Tanya Nielsen (Irvine, Calif.) and senior Cynthia Weir won in 1:34.68, and the 400-medley relay team of Knepper, junior Krisztina Kovacs (Budapest, Hungary), sophomore Gigi deToll (Culpeper, Va.) and senior Chrissy Miller (Seaside Park, N.J.) won in 3:48.15.

The Florida State men’s team wasted no time in taking control as the quartet of Billy Jamerson (Savannah, Ga.), Ed Denton (Maidenhead, England), Michael Averett (Davie, Fla.) and Joel Roycik (Winter Park, Fla.) won the 200 free relay in a time of 1:23.63, the fastest time in the ACC this year.

Getting the Florida State women’s first victory was Lauren Brick (Culpeper, Va.) as she posted an NCAA “B” cut time of 1:03.71 to win the 100 breaststroke.

Giving the FSU men’s team a big boost was the 50-yard freestyle as the Seminoles posted three of the top four times. Co-captains Averett and Roycik were the first two to the wall with Averett posting a season-best mark of 21.12 to win the event, while Roycik was 0.02 behind with sophomore Alex Kennon (Winter Haven, Fla.) placing fourth at 21.39.

ACC Quad Meet with GT, FS, MD & VT – 10/29/2004 to 10/30/2004
Dual Meet Scores – Through Event 23

Men

Florida State University 94.00 89.00 Georgia Tech Swimming

Florida State University 126.00 60.00 University of Maryland

Florida State University 95.50 90.50 Virginia Tech

Georgia Tech Swimming 107.00 79.00 University of Maryland

Georgia Tech Swimming 98.00 88.00 Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech 101.00 84.00 University of Maryland

Women

Florida State University 125.00 61.00 Georgia Tech Swimming

University of Maryland 117.00 69.00 Florida State University

Florida State University 104.00 82.00 Virginia Tech

University of Maryland 131.00 54.00 Georgia Tech Swimming

Virginia Tech 116.50 69.50 Georgia Tech Swimming

University of Maryland 119.00 67.00 Virginia Tech

ATLANTA, GA, October 29.
