TEMPE, Ariz., October 28. ASU men and women head to the midwest to take on top squads from Indiana this weekend. The school reported on the season to date and upcoming events.<\/p>\n
This Week<\/b>
\nThe Arizona State University swimming and diving program heads to the
\nMidwest this weekend where the women will battle against Purdue,
\nIndiana and Notre Dame while the men take on Purdue. The women's
\nmeet against Purdue and Notre Dame is set for Friday, October 29 at
\n6:00 p.m. CT at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. <\/p>\n
The women then travel to Indiana on Saturday, October 30 to take on the Hoosiers at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center, events are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CT. The men will swim against the Boilermakers on Friday and Saturday with Friday's meet scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and Saturday's meet set for 11 a.m.<\/p>\n
The Polls<\/b>
\nThe Sun Devils open up the 2004-05 CSCAA rankings with both the men
\nand women ranked in the top-25. The men come in at No. 17 while the
\nwomen step into the polls at No. 21.<\/p>\n
ASU vs. Purdue<\/b>
\nThe Sun Devil men took on the Boilermakers for the first time last
\nseason where they came out on top, 180-120, in Tempe, Ariz. ASU
\ncomes into the meet ranked No. 17 while Purdue enters in at No. 23.
\nThe women will battle against Purdue for the first time. They enter
\ninto meet at No. 21 and Purdue comes in at No. 25.<\/p>\n
ASU vs. Notre Dame, Women<\/b>
\nThe women head into their matchup with the Fighting Irish ranked four
\nspots ahead in the polls with Notre Dame entering into the top-25 at
\nNo. 25.<\/p>\n
ASU vs. Indiana, Women<\/b>
\nThe Sun Devil women will take on the Hoosiers for the first time in
\nthe history of the program. Indiana enters into the meet ranked
\nNo.17.<\/p>\n
ASU, This Season In The Pool<\/b>
\nThe Arizona State Sun Devils opened their swimming and diving season
\non October 22, with a dual meet at home against UNLV. The women came
\naway victorious 214-86 while the men fell 152.5-141.5. In the
\nswimming pool, the Sun Devil women came away with victories in 11
\nevents with Florencia Szigeti and Caitlin Andrew leading the way with
\ntwo individual and two relay victories apiece. Szigeti touched the
\nwall first in the 100 freestyle (51.00) and the 100 backstroke
\n(57.83) while Andrew came out on top in the 200 butterfly (2:03.86)
\nand the 200 backstroke (2:05.38). Szigeti's 100 freestyle time is
\ngood for an NCAA consideration time. <\/p>\n
The ASU men claimed victories in five events in the swimming pool, with Lucas Azevedo capturing two of those. He touched the wall first in both the 500 freestyle (4:32.06) and the 1000 freestyle (9:27.49). Over in the diving pool, Joona Puhakka came out on top in both the 1-meter (300.83) and 3-meter (283.83) events for the men while Trisha Tumlinson did the same for the ladies with scores of 270.45 and 295.13 respectively.<\/p>\n
Rookie Report<\/b>
\nBoth the men and women welcome six newcomers apiece to the squad this
\nseason and the Sun Devil rookies are already making a splash in the
\nwater this season as they claimed eight of the 16 victories in the
\nfirst dual meet. CJ Nuess and Lucas Azevedo lead the way for the men
\nas Nuess took the title in the ASU pentathlon and continued to show
\nhis speed claiming first in the 400 IM against the Rebels while
\nAzevedo took home two first-place finishes in the meet. <\/p>\n
For the ladies, freshman Caitlin Andrew took home the title in the pentathlon and never slowed claiming four first-place finishes in the season opener, two individual and two as a member of a relay.<\/p>\n
Up Next For The Sun Devils<\/b>
\nThe weekend of November 19-20, both squads will head Los Angeles,
\nCalif. with the women taking on both UCLA and USC while the men
\nbattle against USC in two meets. The women are set to take on UCLA
\non Friday, November 19 while the men swim against USC. Saturday,
