EVANSTON, ILL., October 24. NORTHWESTERN Wildcats won all 13 events to cruise to an easy men\u2019s home victory over Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday as reported by NU.<\/p>\n
With six returning All-Americans, Northwestern knows it has solid swimmers in a number of strokes. Friday it showed those swimmers can excel outside of their normal events in a 149-91 season-opening win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.<\/p>\n
With such a talented squad, it was not a surprise that the Wildcats won all 13 events, but it was a surprise which Wildcats won them.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Mike Alexandrov, a 2004 Olympian in the breaststroke and IM, won the 1000-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile junior Brian Davis–the school record holder in all three distance freestyle events–emerged victorious in the shorter 200-yard freestyle and the 200 butterfly.
\nSophomore Matt Grevers–school record holder in the sprint free events as well as the 100 backstroke–earned a first place finish in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n
Senior Matt Wever–primarily a distance freestyler–showed he could sprint a little, too, winning the 50-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
Some NU swimmers did compete in events they are more known for, with Wever also capturing the 500 freestyle and sophomore Kevin Donohue narrowly out touching senior teammate and NCAA qualifier Louis Torres in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Junior Mike Oxman won both the one-meter and three-meter diving events.<\/p>\n
NU freshman and last year's Swimming World High School Swimmer of the Year, Kyle Bubolz, earned his first collegiate win by placing first in the 100-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
Northwestern returns to action at noon Sunday when it hosts Illinois-Chicago, UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay in the NU Relays.
