ATLANTA, GA, October 22. GEORGIA Tech\u2019s men\u2019s swimming and diving (0-1) opened its season at home in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center against Tennessee (1-0) on Thursday afternoon. Tech reported that the Volunteers defeated the Yellow Jackets by a score of 129-112.<\/p>\n
"I was very pleased with our effort against a team that finished eighth at NCAAs last year," said head coach Seth Baron. "We swept the 50 free and got within a couple of points and changed the complexity of the meet.<\/p>\n
"Tennessee did a nice job today. We had a bunch of second and third-place finishes and if we could've won a couple of those events, who knows. But it was a great way to start our season and build towards the future."<\/p>\n
Yellow Jacket juniors Teemu Kettunen and Ryan Riebesell posted a tying time of 21.49 in the 50 free to win the event for the Jackets. Senior Marc Maier finished third in the event with a time of 21.78. Kettunen added a third-place finish for Tech in the 100 free with a time of 46.86.<\/p>\n
Tech freshman Evan Stowers tallied a NCAA Zone qualifying standard of 347.10 on the three-meter board to lead the Yellow Jacket divers. Sophomore Tony Burkhardt posted a NCAA Zone qualifying mark of 324.30 on the three-meter board to finish second.<\/p>\n
Junior All-American Sam Morgan tallied a second-place finish in the 1650 free with a time of 15:57.73 and a third-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.04.<\/p>\n
Senior Matt Figh posted a second-place finish for the Rambling Wreck in the 500 free and a fourth-place finish in the 1650 free with times of 4:41.03 and 16:16.41, respectively.<\/p>\n
A pair of freshmen showcased their talents in front of the Tech fans this afternoon as 2004 Olympian Onur Uras finished second in the 150 butterfly (1:23.08) and Rob Miller finished third in the 1650 free (16:11.04).<\/p>\n
Tennessee's Casey Dauw broke a Georgia Tech Aquatic Center pool record in the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:57.24 to lead the Volunteers. Tech's Ryan Bishop finished second in the 400 IM (3:59.48) and third in the 150 backstroke (1:24.21).<\/p>\n
Tech's 200 free relay team of Kettunen, Brian Huff, Jason Howard and Maier won the final event of the day for the Yellow Jackets with a time of 1:25.29.<\/p>\n
