CHAPEL HILL, NC, October 18. GEORGIA swimming and diving teams returned to Athens with a split decision from Wednesday's meet at North Carolina.<\/p>\n
The Lady Bulldogs won 10 of 16 events in their 175-125 victory; the Bulldogs men placed first in 7 of 16 events in their 174-126 loss, per reports from the Georgia athletic department.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am pleased with our effort today,\u201d said Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle. \u201cThis was a good start to our season.\u201d<\/p>\n
In their first official meet as Lady Bulldogs, freshmen Elizabeth Hill (200y free, 500y free) and Erin Forster (100y back, 200y back) were double-event winners for the Georgia cause. Joining them with the top times of the afternoon were Laura Conway (1650y free), Andrea Georoff (50y free), Tricia Harm (200y IM), Paige Kearns (100y free), Melissa Klein (200y breast), and Sarah Poewe (100y breast).<\/p>\n
Three Lady Bulldogs met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard on Wednesday afternoon: Laura Conway (1650y free), Stephanie Carr (1650y free), and Sarah Poewe (100y breast).<\/p>\n
For the Bulldogs, sophomore Chris Colwill won both 1m and 3m springboard events. Other event winners included Damien Alleyne (100y free), Peter Osborn (200y back) and Gil Stovall (200y fly). Matt Owen (1000y free, 500y free), Scott Gardner (100y breast), Peter Verhoef (50y free, 100y fly) and Michael Cellini (200y breast) each earned second-place finishes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were missing a few able bodies on the men\u2019s side,\u201d said Bauerle. \u201cWe were without five of our top eight guys. Some of the young guys grew up quickly and did a heck of a job. We look to have the makings of a really good team, although we will be a little thin until January.\u201d<\/p>\n
Up next on the schedule, Georgia opens its home season on Wed. 10\/20
