Sandeno is normally known for the strength of the second half of her races. She had negative split her morning swim at 2:04 and 2:03. Tonight she trailed at the 50 by 0.03 (:28.97), took the lead at the 100 with the only sub-minute split (:59.87) and never looked back. When she finished, at 4:02.01 compared to McClarty\u2019s 4:04.49 (2:01.72), Sandeno failed to negative split by less than a quarter second. (2:00.89 and 2:01.12). <\/p>\n
800 champion Sachiko Yamada(JPN) negative split her race (2:02.52; 2:02.12 = 4:04.64) and was closing strongly on McClarty when the final wall intervened, with the American still in second.<\/p>\n
Sandeno won 3 gold medals on the opening night of the meet (200 Butterfly, 400 Individual Medley; anchor leg of USA 4 x 200 freestyle relay) despite having suffered a concussion earlier in the day. She is unquestioningly one of the leading lights of the meet, not just because of her medals but also because her performances were inspiring and undoubtedly contributed to the atmosphere of success on which the American team continues to feed. <\/p>\n
