AUSTIN, TX, October 3. BOTH the Men\u2019s and Women\u2019s swimming and diving squads from the University of Texas swimming and diving teams opened their seasons at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center with the Orange vs. White scrimmage ending Friday afternoon, per reports from University athletic officials. <\/p>\n
On the women's side, a total of nine different swimmers captured wins in 12 individual events and the Orange team prevailed, 146-136, led by sophomore Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.), who captured both the 100-and 200-yard breaststrokes. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in the men's scrimmage, freshman Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) and seniors Nathan O'Brien (Sammamish, Wash.) and Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas) each captured wins in multiple events to lead the White team to a 144-125 victory.<\/p>\n
"Orange and White is a great way to kick off the year and it's is always a fun meet," Texas women's co-head coach Mike Walker said. "It's great to compete alongside the men and we had a nice turnout from the fans which is always great." <\/p>\n
After sophomore Elaine Ferritto (Columbus, Ohio) kicked off the meet by posting the top time in the 400-yard individual medley (4:22.17), Orange teammates Kristy Siminski (Portage, Ind.), Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) and Tinnon reeled off three-straight wins touching the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke and 100-yard breaststroke, respectively. <\/p>\n
Sophomore white-teamers Katie Robinson (Dillsboro, Ind.) and Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wisc.) then posted back-to-back wins in the 200-yard butterfly and 50-yard freestyle before Siminski captured her second individual title on the day with the top time in the 100-yard freestyle. Wanezek, who was edged by Siminski by two-hundredths of a second in the 100-yard freestyle, went on to capture the win in the 100-yard butterfly.<\/p>\n
Tinnon would capture the sweep of the breaststroke for the Orange team before freshman Macie Garrett (Nashville, Tenn.) earned the victory in the 500-yard freestyle and senior Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.) took the top spot in the 200-yard individual medley to seal the win for team Orange. Junior Elizabeth Wycliffe (Kingston, Ontario) rounded out the nine individual winners on the day for the Texas women, capturing the top time in the 200-yard backstroke.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in men's competition, McGinnis and fellow freshman Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas) each began their collegiate careers with wins in their respective events. McGinnis, competing for the white team, clocked the top time in the 200-yard freestyle, and Rohleder followed suit, notching the top performance for the Orange team in the 100-yard backstroke. <\/p>\n
"I was very pleased with the way things went today," men's head coach Eddie Reese said. "They kept their spirits up and they had fun doing it and even though they got tired at the end, they did things the right way, the whole time."<\/p>\n
After Rohleder's win for team Orange, the White squad went on to win seven of the next eight heats with seniors Schurr, who captured the breaststroke double, and O'Brien, who won the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke leading the way. <\/p>\n
Also grabbing wins for the Orange team were sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wisc.), who won the 100-yard freestyle, and McGinnis, who captured his second individual title on the day in the 500-yard freestyle. Daniel DiToro (Scottsdale, Ariz.) rounded out the winners for the White team, taking first in the 100-yard butterfly.<\/p>\n
Junior David Kahn (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) won 200-yard individual medley while sophomore Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman, Ohio) captured win in the 50-yard freestyle for team Orange.<\/p>\n
On the diving front, sophomore Matt Bisordi (San Mateo, Calif.) edged out freshman Brian Smith (Carrolltown, Texas) in both the one- and three-meter springboards for the Orange team, while, on the women's side, senior Monica Maxwell (San Jose, Calif.) and sophomore Ali Bunting (Grafton, Wis.) split wins. Maxwell's score of 179.72 narrowly edged Bunting in the one-meter springboard. Bunting finished with 177.97.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
