ATHENS, September 25. AMERICANS continued to rack up the gold at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. The US is now tied for third in golds and tied for fifth in overall medals, as reported by national team program manager Julie O\u2019Neill. <\/p>\n
First time Paralympian, Carly Haynie, led off the US team on Wednesday evening with a strong third place finish in the Women\u2019s SB9 100 m Breaststroke. Haynie\u2019s time of 1:25.92 shaved almost 4 seconds off the previous American Record, which has stood since the Atlanta Games. <\/p>\n
In the Men\u2019s S8 100m Backstroke, Travis Mohr, finished in an American and PanAmerican Record time of 1:10.15 to take the gold in the event. This should be the first of several medals for Mohr in these Games as he has the 100m Breaststroke, 200m Individual Medley and relays yet to come later this week. <\/p>\n
In the final event of the evening, the 34pt Women\u2019s 400 Free Relay, the US team of Ashley Owens, Erin Popovich, Jessica Long and Kelly Crowley held off the world record-holding and defending gold medal team from Canada to finish in an American Record of 4:40.57. This is the first gold medal in a Paralympic Games for a functional class (20pt or 34pt) relay for the American team. <\/p>\n
