INDIANAPOLIS, August 26. REGISTRATION is now available for the 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress, which will be highlighted by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) medical director, Dr. Patrick Schamasch, discussing anti-doping techniques used at the Athens Olympic Games. <\/p>\n
The 15th FINA World Sports Medicine Congress is jointly-sponsored by the American College of Sports Medicine and Indiana Sports Corporation and is funded by St. Vincent Sports Medicine. The six-person FINA Sports Medicine Committee, led by chairperson Dr. Margo Mountjoy, will conduct the event. <\/p>\n
The Sports Medicine Congress will take place at the Indiana Convention Center in downtown Indianapolis Oct. 12-13 immediately following the 7th FINA Short Course World Swimming Championships. Scientists, physicians, students, certified athletic trainers, athletes and coaches are invited to network, discuss and learn about the most popular topics and issues in sports medicine for aquatic sports. <\/p>\n
Registration is available over the Internet at www.worldswim2004.com or www.acsm.org. Registration is also available by calling the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) at (317) 637-9200, ext. 141 or 135. The fee is $250 USD for adults\/professionals and $110 USD for students. Registration fees include: abstract compilation book, CME's (Continuing Medical Education) and more. <\/p>\n
\u201cAn international sports medicine gathering such as this doesn't happen very often, maybe once in a lifetime,\u201d said Ralph Reiff, director of Medical & Health Services for St. Vincent Sports Medicine, which is helping to fund the Congress. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a wonderful opportunity for athletic trainers in our community to learn from some of the top sports science and sports medicine experts from all over the world. It is an even greater opportunity for students to develop a network and get ahead of others in their field.\u201d <\/p>\n
Dr. Schamasch, the IOC's medical and scientific director, will be giving the featured speech at the Sports Medicine Congress – the Bleasdale Memorial Lecture – on Tuesday, Oct. 12, from 9-10 a.m. Part of Dr. Schamasch's lecture will address the medical and anti-doping programs being utilized at the Athens Olympic Games. <\/p>\n
Originally from Boulogne, France, and specializing in sports traumatology and orthopaedics, Dr. Schamasch has been the IOC\u2019s medical and scientific director since 1993. His career with the IOC began as a member of its Medical Commission from 1987 to 1993. While serving as part of the commission, he was the chief medical officer of the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France. <\/p>\n
In the last several years, the Sports Medicine Congress has taken place either preceding or following the World Championships. It draws highly scientific presentations in aquatics medicine. In addition, medical advice and practical applications have been beneficial to clinical participants, as well as coaches. The two-day event will highlight current research in aquatics medicine. Sessions will be offered in a variety of formats including special lectures, panel discussions, and poster sessions. <\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone — sports medicine physicians, scientists, coaches, athletic trainers, and other health professionals — will gain tremendously from the Congress,\u201d said James Whitehead, executive vice president of the Indianapolis-based American College of Sports Medicine, a 20,000 member international leader in the scientific and medical aspects of sports and exercise, and a joint-sponsor of the event. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Congress will cover leading edge information on dietary supplements and drug use, needs of the older athlete, eating disorders, performance issues, and the prevention and treatment of injuries.\u201d <\/p>\n
