IAN Thorpe set the morning standard in the final heat of the 200-meter freestyle prelims when he edged the Flying Dutchman, Pieter van den Hoogenband, by just 0.10 of a second. Italian Emiliano Brembilla was third fastest swimming in the same heat.

Americans Klete Keller (1:47.97) and Michael Phelps (1:48.43) were comfortable winners of their respective heats.

Grant Hackett was off the pace in his first 100 but came home with a fast back half (final 50m split: 26.69) to touch in 1:48.90. Canada has two through in Rick Say and Brent Hayden while Trinidad's 200 meter medley hopeful George Bovell will also swim tonight.

The cut-off fell very neatly at 1:50.00, with only the top 16 swimmers going under this standard.

Men 200m Freestyle Heats

Record Splits Name NOC Location Date
WR 1:44.06 24.81 51.45 1:18.26 THORPE Ian AUS Fukuoka (JPN) 25 JUL 2001
OR 1:45.35 24.51 51.12 1:18.31 V.D.
