ATHENS, Greece. August 14. NEVER underestimate a champion. <\/p>\n
Olympic triple gold medalist Inky de Bruijn showed her fighting qualities when she beat Aussie Petria Thomas, 57.50 to 57.93, in the second semifinal of the women's 100 meter fly after Thomas had belted de Bruijn in the prelims when she went 57.47 to 58.47.<\/p>\n
Gold medals are won in finals, so it should be a titanic struggle tomorrow night.<\/p>\n
Pole Otylia Jedrzejczak was third through in 58.10 – slower than her 57.84 in the morning. Jedrzejczak may also make the 400 freestyle final tomorrow night which will run 30 minutes after the fly but she should fight out the minor medals with Aussie rookie Jessica Schipper and the veterans Slovakian Martina Moravcova and American Jenny Thompson. American Rachel Komisarz missed the cut, finishing eleventh in 59.34. In all, seven women swam under 59 seconds, with Japan's Junko Onishi taking the eighth spot for the final in 59.24.<\/p>\n
German superstar Franzi van Almsick withdrew from the final after qualifying eleventh for the semis deciding to give her all to the freestyle relay. <\/p>\n
