Thomas<\/p>\n<p>ATHENS, August 14. PETRIA Thomas reinforced her top ranking coming into this meet when she clocked a very impressive 57.47 &#8211; eighth fastest performance over the distance all-time.  More importantly, she left defending Olympic champion and worId record-holder, Inge de Bruijn, in third place, a full second in her wake (58.47). <\/p>\n<p>Polish world record-holder over the four-lap distance, Otylia Jedrzejczak, looked strong winning  her heat with her fastest time over the distance, 57.84 (6th all-time performer).<\/p>\n<p>Silver medalist from Sydney, Slovakian Martina Moravcova (58.48), Aussie rookie 17-year-old Jessica Schipper (PR 58.57 \u2013 2nd all-time Aussie) and veteran American Jenny Thompson (58.77) were the only other swimmers under 59 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>American Rachel Komisarz was tied for eighth fastest through to tonight\u2019s semifinals, touching in 59.38. German swim queen Franzi van Almsick made it through in 11th place (59.53).  Like Thompson, van Almsick is competing in her fourth Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Quite neatly, the break between the 16 semifinalists and the non-qualifiers was one minute, with Sweden&#39;s Anna-Karin Kammerling, the short course WR-holder over 50 meters, taking the final spot in 59.84.<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the morning session, van Almsick scratched from the semifinals to save her strength for the 400 free relay.
