AUBURN, Ala. August 12. AUBURN is one of the premier NCAA Swimming and Diving programs for both men and women, winning multiple titles for each gender over the last few years. They are proud of their current and former student-athletes, thirteen of whom will be in Athens, along with three members of their coaching staff. <\/p>\n
It is a first class operation all the way down to the information staff which gone to the effort to not only describe the Olympic experiences and expectations of its athletes but has also prepared and released a \u201cCompetition and TV Listing\u201d customized for their athletes, including all appearances they may potentially make if they climb the ladder through prelims, semi-finals and into the Olympic final. \nWith the opening ceremony of the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad less than 24 hours away, 13 members of the Auburn swimming and diving program are preparing to take center stage on the world's grandest stage. <\/p>\n
\tThe Olympics, which are being held in Athens, Greece, the birthplace of the games, are considered the pinnacle of sport and for many, the ultimate in one's athletic achievements. Over the next 15 days, the 13 members of the Auburn swimming and diving program will showcase to the world just what they are made of.<\/p>\n
\tThe Tigers will have 12 current or former swimmers competing from a total of nine different countries while Caesar Garcia will be diving as a part of the USA Olympic team. Three members of the USA Olympic swimming squad are Tigers (Mark Gangloff, Margaret Hoelzer and Bryce Hunt) while two will swim for France (Romain Barnier and Fred Bousquet). The other Tigers competing are George Bovell (Trinidad & Tobago), Eileen Coparropa (Panama), Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe), Brett Hawke (Australia), Matt Kidd (England), Jeremy Knowles (Bahamas) and Jana Kolukanova (Estonia).<\/p>\n
\tThe Tigers will also have three coaches aiding swimmers of the world as AU Co-Head Women's Coach Kim Brackin is the head coach for Zimbabwe, AU Assistant Men's Coach Dave Durden is the head coach for Panama and AU Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer is one of the USA's diving coaches.<\/p>\n
\tCoparropa, who led her country into the arena during the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia, will again be the flag bearer for her native Panama during Friday's opening ceremonies (7 p.m. CT – NBC). <\/p>\n
\tThe swimming competition starts on Saturday, Aug. 14, and three Tigers will swim that day. Knowles will be the first Tiger to vie for a medal as he swims the 400-meter individual medley. Joining him on the first day of action will be Coventry (400m IM) and Gangloff (100m breast). Swimming runs through Saturday, Aug. 21. <\/p>\n
All of the swimming action will be aired on NBC with prelims shown during the morning programming and semi-finals and finals during the evening programming.<\/p>\n
\tGarcia's competition will be held on Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th.<\/p>\n
\tAnyone wishing to send the Tigers a good-luck note in Athens may do so through their athletic department. <\/p>\n
