LOS ALAMITOS, Calif – July 31, 2004 \u2014 USA Water Polo recently announced that the U.S. Olympic Committee has named the women of Team USA from USA Water Polo as its Team of the Month for June, marking the first time that the women\u2019s squad has captured the award.<\/p>\n
Team USA won its sixth straight international tournament with a gold medal
\nfinish at the first-ever FINA Women\u2019s World League Super Finals with a
\nthrilling shootout win over World Cup champ Hungary before 3,100 fans at the
\nCharter All Digital Aquatic Centre in Long Beach, Calif., on June 27. The
\ntournament featured all eight of the teams that will participate in this
\nyear\u2019s Summer Olympics. The win gave the U.S. its sixth straight first place
\nfinish in international competition. The last time that the U.S. missed out
\non a first place finish on its home soil was the 2002 U.S. Cup in Chicago,
\nIll. <\/p>\n
Since 1999, the U.S. has only failed to play for a medal in one
\ninternational tournament, taking a fifth place finish at the 2003 Thetis Cup
\nin Greece. Over that span, the U.S. took the top spot at the 2003 Pan
\nAmerican Games and World Championships and silver at the 2002 World Cup and
\n2000 Olympics.<\/p>\n
The team\u2019s performance at the World League Super Finals solidified the
\nteam\u2019s billing as the gold medal favorite heading into the Athens Games.<\/p>\n
