Denver. July 18 \u2013 THE UNIVERSITY of Denver men and women\u2019s swimming and diving program named Mike Laitala, of Richardson, Texas, the new assistant men and women\u2019s swimming and diving coach. <\/p>\n
Laitala comes to Denver from the University of North Texas where he was the assistant swim coach for the women\u2019s swimming and diving team for their 2003-04 season. He was also a volunteer assistant coach for the 2003 National Championship runner-up University of Texas men\u2019s swimming and diving team.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are delighted to have Mike Laitala join our staff,\u201d Head Swimming and Diving, Jim Henry, said. \u201cHe brings a tremendous amount of experience both as a volunteer coach of an NCAA Championship runner-up Texas team in 2003 and as an All-American student-athlete. Mike\u2019s relationship and rapport with his student-athletes are amazing. We are all excited about the new dimension to the Denver program Mike adds.\u201d <\/p>\n
An All-American student-athlete and four year letterwinner from 1996-2000 at the University of Texas, Laitala specialized in the breaststroke and individual medley events. He also swam the third leg of Texas\u2019 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team that placed seventh at the 1999 NCAA Championships. In 2000, Laitala represented Richardson, Texas, at the 2000 Olympic Trials. Laitala received his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology in 2002.<\/p>\n
