THE men\u2019s 100 meter butterfly \u2013one of the most eagerly-anticipated events of these Trials \u2013 kicked off this morning, and gave intimations of things to come in the final two rounds.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming in the final heat, Ian Crocker, the world record-holder, staked out his turf, blasting through the first 50 meters in 23.84 seconds \u2013 under world record pace.  He fell slightly off that pace in the second lap, then had to glide into his finish, but his 51.69 is still history\u2019s fifth-fastest 100 fly, and a time only he and Michael Phelps have bettered.<\/p>\n<p>Phelps, who will be swimming two finals tonight \u2013 the 200 back and 200 IM \u2013 along with the semifinals of the 100 fly, had the second-fastest time, 53.27.  But he did it his way, coasting through the first 50 in 25.67 seconds \u2013 tied for 26th fastest among the 48 swimmers.  But his 27.60 was the fastest in the event, though only 0.15 quicker than Crocker.<\/p>\n<p>Look for Phelps to be quicker tonight \u2013 even with the two finals he\u2019ll be swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Seven swimmers cracked 54 and it took 54.06 to make top eight.  Cut-off for the semis was 54.78.
