LONG BEACH, Calif., July 11. HE did it again. Brendan Hansen, three days removed from a world record in the 100-meter breaststroke, claimed his second world record of these Olympic Trials, as the University of Texas product clocked 2:09.04 in the 200 breast, his pet event. The former record (2:09.42) was set last year by Japan's Kosuke Kitajima.<\/p>\n
The 2001 world champ in the event, Hansen also removed Mike Barrowman's name from the record. Barrowman had held the American record (2:10.16) since the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Hansen led from the start and expanded his lead throughout the race, until he was challenging only the clock.<\/p>\n
After splitting 29.22 for his opening 50 meters, Hansen hit the midpoint of the race in 1:01.88, well under the world-record split. At the 150-meter mark, Hansen was timed in 1:35.38. He brought the race home in 33.66.<\/p>\n
Scott Usher, swimming a strong back half to his race, picked up the second Olympic nod with a time of 2:10.90, making him the fourth-fastest American in the history of the event. Usher was followed in third place by Gary Marshall (2:13.82).<\/p>\n
Ed Moses, the 2000 Olympic silver medalist in the 100 breast, finished fourth in 2:14.12, just ahead of Mark Gangloff (2:14.17). Moses has been struggling throughout the competition with breathing problems.<\/p>\n
