THE finals of Day Three of the Janet Evans Invitational, being held June 10-13 at the Charter All Digital Aquatic Center in Long Beach, Calif., proved to be a crowd-pleasing, record- breaking experience.

The night started off with — who else? — Natalie Coughlin obliterating the field in the 200m freestyle. Natalie was out fast, splitting a 57.47 at the 100, and led the entire way, just missing the meet record and her personal best time when she hit the wall in 1:58.31. Australia’s Petria Thomas was a second and a half behind, finishing next in 1:59.80. Martina Moravcova finished third.

The consol heat of the men’s 200 free started a record breaking streak, when Klete Keller cranked out a meet record 1:49.26. Keller’s record lasted only a few minutes, until the Thorpedo stepped up to the blocks to shatter not only the meet record, but also Michael Phelps’ US Open record, smoking a 1:45.63, and bringing the crowd to their feet. He split 52.04 – 53.59.

Tara Kirk led the entire 200 breast and easily won the race in 2:28.46, just one second off of her best time this year.

In the men’s race, Ed Moses, who failed to qualify for the A final, felt he had something to prove. Swimming in the B final, Moses dove in to provide the second meet record set in a consol heat, clocking a 2:15.39. The question was, would this record last through the A final?

Though he had qualified seventh and was out in lane 1, Australia's Jim Piper, appeared to have the best shot. Piper had lost to Moses at last year’s Duel in the Pool, and he thirsted for revenge.

Interestingly, the two men had almost identical splits at the 50 and the 100. By 150 meters, the Aussie had a built a slight lead. But the final 50 told the story as Piper came home more than 1.5 seconds faster than Moses to touch in 2:13.43, a new meet record. Greg Owen (2:15.42) and Nuk Sirisanont (2:15.52) followed in second and third.

In the women’s 50 free, Haley Cope won prelims by 7/10 of a second and appeared to have the inside track for gold in the final. She did, clocking 25.18. Arlene Semeco was second and Becky Short was third.

The men’s 50 free ended up being a race between American Olympic veteran Gary Hall, Jr., and Poland’s Bart Kizierowski who qualified 1-2 in this morning’s prelim. Hall ended up finishing first in a meet record 22.26. Kizierowski was second, and Jason Lezak was third.

Kaitlin Sandeno was this morning’s top qualifier in the 400IM. Going into the final her only potential challenger was Maggie Bowen, since Amanda Beard scratched the race. Sandeno went out aggressively and won the race by four seconds in an impressive 4:44.98. Bethany Pendleton finished second, and Bowen was third.

Going into the 400 IM, Eric Vendt had had one satisfying race (Thursday’s 800 free) and one disappointing race (last night’s 400 free). Now, with the Trials looming, he wanted to post a fast time in the 400 IM though still in heavy training.

Taking the race out aggressively, the USC grad clocked a swift 4:16.50 to win the event by four seconds. Keith Beavers was second.

JANET EVANS INVITATIONAL
Long Beach, CA
June 10-13, 2004

50 m pool

RESULTS
DAY Three: June 12, 2004

Women’s 200m Freestyle

FINAL RESULTS

Finals

WR 1:56.64 VAN ALMSICK FRANZISKA Berlin (GER) 3 AUG 2002 GER
AM 1:57.41 BENKO LINDSAY Barcelona (ESP) 24 JUL 2003 USA
JE 1:58.02 POLL CLAUDIA
OT 2:03.39 1 JAN 2004

Rank Name YB Club Result Points R.T.
