LOIS Nochman was the only American to set a world record on Day 4 of the FINA Masters World Championships in Riccione, Italy, but there was no dearth of record-breaking this day as no fewer than eight Masters world marks bit the dust.

100m butterfly
Swimming in the women's 80-84 age group, Nochman took a hatchet, Lizzie Borden-style, to the old mark of 2:21.88 set by Germany's Gertrud Meerwald in 2000. When she was finished chopping, she had hacked more than 15 seconds off the old mark with her 2:06.55.

Two other women and one man set 100 fly marks. In the 60-64 division, Britain's Judy Wilson slashed her own standard of 1:23.49 set earlier this year with a 1:17.34.

Austria's Sylvia Neuhauser clocked 1:50.12 for a 75-79 record, lopping six seconds off June Krauser's 1:56.07 from 2001.

The only other US swimmer to win was Z. Tusa, who clocked 1:05.11 to take the 25-29 race.

For the men, Canada's John Van Buuren flew to a 50-54 record of 1:01.43, just under American Greg Shaw's 1:01.79 set last year.

Three American men won their age groups: Tom Geiman, 55-59, 1:06.99; Tom Maine, 75-79, 1:42.47; and William Johnston, 85-89, 2:34.17.

Interestingly, the winning times in the four youngest age groups were all 58s, with Latvia's A. Yakovlev, swimming in the 35-39 age group, turning in the fastest time at 58.10.

50m breaststroke
Three world records fell in the 50m breaststroke, with 1960 Japanese Olympian Yoshi Osaki setting a men's 65-69 mark of 35.56. His time broke the old mark of 36.35 set three years ago by countryman Hiroshi Kotegawa.

For the women, former East German Olympian Sylvia Gerasch notched her second 35-39 mark, touching in 33.64, just under Caroline Krattli's 33.91 from 2001.

Russia's Olga Kokorina scored her second 80-84 mark with a 54.44 effort, lowering her own standard of 55.97 from last year.

No American woman and only two men took gold in the 50 breast. Jack Groselle continued his own personal gold rush, winning the 50-54 race in 32.20, while Pete Andersen annexed the 60-64 title in 35.56.

200m backstroke
Great Britain's Lesley Wilde was the only swimmer to set a global mark in the 200m back and she did it by the slimmest of margins. Swimming in the 45-49 division, Wilde sliced 5-hundredths of a second off her world mark of 2:36.59 set earlier this year.

One American woman and four men took gold in their respective age groups. Bunny Cederlund took the 80-84 division in 4:38.51.

Jens Peter Berndt won the men's 40-44 contest in 2:17.32. In the 50-54 age group Fred Ferroggiaro was the victor in 2:27.31. Tod Spieker graabbed the gold for men 55-59 in 2:34.55. Paul Hutinger wrapped up the 80-84 age group in 3:30.76.

Winners:

Women's 50m breaststroke
25 – 29 anni – M.
