RICCIONE, Italy, June 7. EIGHT individual world records, highlighted by a brilliant 100m breast by three-time British Olympian Nick Gillingham in the men's 35-39 age group, tumbled on the fifth day of competition at the Masters World Championships in Riccione, Italy.<\/p>\n
Gillingham clocked 1:04.73 to record the fastest time at the meet. <\/p>\n
Three other global marks fell today. The USA's Jack Groselle took the men's 50-54 race in a record 1:11.49; while the German pair of Ulrike Urbaniak and L. Knoepfle set women's marks in the same event. Competing in the 50-54 age group, Urbaniak clocked 1:25.32. Knoepfle set a 65-69 standard with her 1:36.41.<\/p>\n
Four records fell in the 400 IM as well. Brazil's Djan Madruga, a former Indiana star who said he wanted to break the 45-49 record by a second "for Doc," instead slashed seven seconds off the old mark to become the oldest man to break five minutes. Madruga clocked a startling 4:59.83.<\/p>\n
Italy's Lorenzo Marugo, a physician, recorded his third world mark with a 50-54 mark of 5:03.27, victimizing Rick Colella for the third time.<\/p>\n
Another Italian, Giampiero Fossati, clocked 5:46.59 to break Ed Cazalet's
\n5:49.53 from two years ago.<\/p>\n
Germany's Brigitte Merten set a record for women 60-64 with her 6:14.40.<\/p>\n
Two additional marks, by teams from Italy and Britain, set records in the 200m mixed medley relay.<\/p>\n
