FRESNO, Calif., June 8. SPECTATORS at California\u2019s Central Section Valley High School Championships, held May 20-22 at California State University, Fresno, may have been wondering if any schools besides Clovis West High School (CWHS) were at the meet. The Clovis West girls took gold in eight of the 12 events, walking away with a championship trophy. The Clovis West boys won only one individual event and one relay, but had no problems walking away with a title as well.<\/p>\n
The girls' team at CWHS started the meet with a winning streak of six straight events. Kristen Hastrup (senior) and Nadia Dwidar (junior) accounted for four of those gold medals, taking two events apiece\u2014the 200y free (1:51.24)\/100y fly (56.83) and 50y free (24.61)\/100y free (52.77) respectively. There were no other double individual female winners, and CWHS took all three relays. <\/p>\n
The men\u2019s scoreboard wasn\u2019t flashing \u201cCWHS\u201d by the first place finisher's name very often, but that didn\u2019t stop those boys from winning the meet. The individual male victors were from a variety of schools, with three schools having twice-is-nice winners. Andrew Cox, a senior from Foothill High School took control of the 200y free\/100y fly combo, clocking in at 1:41.06 and 51.44 respectively.<\/p>\n
Stockdale High School\u2019s Matt Scanlon was representing his team well in the 200y IM and 100y backstroke. The super-junior touched the wall in 1:52.19 (200IM) and 50.81. <\/p>\n
Joe Whittington from Garces High School wasn\u2019t going to finish his senior year without a couple of gold medals, so he stepped up and sprinted to victory winning the 50y free (20.17) and 100 free (46.16). <\/p>\n
Whittinghton's 50 free time ranks him #1 in the nation for 2004.<\/p>\n
