BERLIN, June 7. SHE is young, unknown and naive — not yet aware of any limits to her speed. In other words, she is extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n

That was the consensus in Berlin today, where 16 yeaar-old unknown Theresa Rohmann destroyed a strong field in the women's 200m IM and earned herself a first-class ticket to Athens. <\/p>\n

Oh, yes. Her 2:12.05 is also the world's fastest time this year. <\/p>\n

Veteran Annika Mehlhorn was a distant second at 2:16.48.<\/p>\n

Rohmann has rocketed from obscurity in the last six months. She was unranked last year in the world's top 25 rankings. The 25th fastest time was 2:16.24. Last winter, she moved up to 12th in the world short course rankings at 2:11.15. Now her 2:12.05 long course time makes her a genuine medal contender.<\/p>\n

The other races tonight were all close. Franzi van Almsick edged Antje Buschschulte in the 100m free, 54.96 to 54.97. Petra Dallmann was third in 55.14, followed by Britta Steffan at 55.27. The top six finishers were all within 56-hundredths of a second, ensuring that Germany, which holds the world record in the 400m free relay, will have a strong relay squad in Athens.<\/p>\n

Nineteen year-old Marco de Carli upset the faavored veterans in the 100m back with a solid 54.76 second swim. Thomas Rupprath was runner-up in 55.31, with Steve Theloke (55.51), Steffen Driesen (55.65) and 200-meter winner Sebastian Halgasch (55.84) close behind.<\/p>\n

The men's 200m breaststroke went to Jens Kruppa, who came from behind to win in 2:14.60. Newcomer Johannes Neumann, who led throgh 150 meters, hung on for second in 2:15.60, just ahead of onrushing Reiner Schneider (2:15.68) and Andreas Losel (2:15.83).<\/p>\n

Jens Schreiber took the 200m free in 1:48.57, a tenth of a second ahead of Stefan Herbst, as three other men swam 1:49s.<\/p>\n
