BERLIN, June 4. JANINE Pietsch and Helga Meeuw provided the two surprises on the first day of the German Nationals and Olympic Trials in Berlin.<\/p>\n

Pietsch, a 22 year-old from the Delphin Ingolstadt Swim Club upset Antje Buschschulte in the 100m back, 1:01.38 to 1:01.43. Meeuw, 19, of Wiesbaden, took advantage of a faltering Rupprath, who had taken his 200m butterfly race out too hard (55.24), passing the veteran off the final wall and defeating him soundly, 1:56.99 to 1:58.20<\/p>\n

Otherwise, it was business as usual, with favored veterans winning as expected.<\/p>\n

Sandra Volker, 30, won the 50 free in 25.32 with 20 year-old Dorothea Brandt a close second at 25.40.<\/p>\n

Nicole Hetzer took the 400IM in a strong 4:42.74, with 17 year-old newcomer, Teresa Rohmann, second in 4:44.96.<\/p>\n

Hannah Stockbauer, Swimming World<\/i>'s Female Swimmer of the Year for 2003, won the 400m free as she pleased in 4:09.71.<\/p>\n

In the day's most exciting race, Christian Hein overtook Thomas Lurz at the 1300-meter mark, then held off Lurz's furious final 50 meter sprint, to take the 1500. Hein touched in 15:08.99 to Lurz's 15:10.33.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mark Warnecke, who could be competing in Riccione at the Masters Championships demonstrated why he chose to swim in Berlin. The 34 year-old took the 50m breast handily in 27.91.<\/p>\n

In the men's 50 back, Stev Theloke won in 25.43, 18-hundredths in front of Stefan Driessen.<\/p>\n
