IT was a race to the finish and depth that decided the fate of the 2004 North Coast Swimming and Diving Championships held May 14-15 at the Clarke Memorial Swim Center in Walnut Creek, California. In the end, Campolindo High School and De La Salle High School walked away with the respective girls’ and boys’ titles.

On the girls’ side, two freshmen turned heads with their first high school championship performances. Kate Dwelley from Liberty High School took control of the middle distance events, clocking a 1:48.21 to win the 200 yard free, and a 4:51.89 to take the 500 free.

Montgomery High School’s Amanda Sims sizzled in her 100 fly (54.01), removing Natalie Coughlin’s North Coast Swimming record of 54.02 from the books.

Junior L. Rogers from Carondelet High School also had an impressive meet, winning the 100 free (50.89) and 100 back (55.01). The girls’ team title came down to the 400 free relay at the end, with Campolindo edging Carondelet 3:30.67 to 3:32.02. The final team scores: Campolindo 299, Carondelet 297.5.

On the boys’ side, it was depth more than first place finishes that sealed De La Salle’s victory. In fact, De La Salle only won two events, both courtesy of senior Matt Beil. Beil ruled the middle distances, coming in at 1:41.64 in the 200 free and 4:31.05 in the 500. Senior Dash Rothberg from Bently High School was the only other male double event winner, picking up the 50 free (21.43) and 100 back (51.47).

For complete results visit http://www.cifncs.org/

By Nicole Leffer WALNUT CREEK, Calif., June 5.
