NEW ORLEANS, La., May 25. THE Tulane University swimming and diving team added another member to its ever-expanding program as head coach Daniella Irle announced the hiring of former U.S. National Team member and five-time collegiate All-American Christopher Devine as the new diving coach on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Devine will be in charge of all aspects of Green Wave springboard and platform events as the squad will field a diving team for the first time since the 1989-90 season. Last season, Tulane won 13 meets and finished fifth in the Conference USA Championship despite forfeiting all diving points.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think Chris is going to be a great fit for us here at Tulane,\u201d Irle said. \u201cHe understands that we need to grow this part of our program slowly and carefully. He is a team player who will always put the needs of the total program first. He was a first-rate diver himself at the collegiate level and he understands the demands of being a student-athlete.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn addition, he was also successful on a national and international level, and that type of experience in a coach will benefit our divers as they progress and mature as athletes. It is exciting to be completing our staff and putting a more complete team in the pool next year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Devine comes to Tulane from Charlotte, N.C., where he has been the director and coach of Queen City Diving since 2003. He also served as head coach for Charlotte-Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center and was the sole diving coach for 10 Charlotte-Mecklenberg County high schools. During his tenure at QCD, Devine helped eight student-athletes qualify for the 2004 North Carolina High School State Championship.<\/p>\n
Prior to his stint in Charlotte, Devine was a coach and director for the Mission Viejo Nadadores from 2001-02 where he helped 21 athletes qualify for the Junior Olympic Zone Championships and sent six to the Senior National Championships.<\/p>\n
The position at Tulane marks Devine\u2019s return to the collegiate ranks as he served as an assistant at Florida State in 1999-2000. Devine also spent the 1998-99 season with the Montgomery Dive Club in Rockville, Md., the 1997-98 season at Fort Lauderdale Diving in Florida, and was the assistant camp director of the Penn State Diving Camp from 1994-97.<\/p>\n
A gifted diver, Devine was a six-time member of the U.S. National Team and a two-time national championship team member. In 2000, he was named USA International Three-Meter Synchro Champion, and finished sixth in the Olympic Trials.<\/p>\n
Devine starred as a collegian at Penn State from 1990-95 where he was a five-time All-American and was named Big 10 Diver of the Year in 1994 after winning the Big 10 3-Meter championship.<\/p>\n
Devine graduated with a degree in exercise physiology from Penn State in 1995, and holds certifications from U.S. Diving in Safety, Level I, Level II, Dryboard and Trampoline Spotting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
