LOS ANGELES, May 20. IT only took the San Pedro Pirates' boys' 200 yard free relay team 1:30.04 to break a 39-year-old City CIF Section record.<\/p>\n
San Pedro toppled the standard in the prelims yesterday of the LA City high school championships at the Los Angeles Memorial Swim Stadium, site of the 1932 Olympic competition.<\/p>\n
The San Pedro team of Jeff Hart, Jeff Martinez, Cameron Nelson and Ivan Perhat broke the 1:30.40 record of Lake Encino Birmingham from the 1965 championships.<\/p>\n
"We were going for it today," said Nelson, a junior who swam the third leg. "It would be great if we could do it again in the finals."<\/p>\n
San Pedro will have that opportunity next Wednesday (May 26) when the championships conclude at the same venue. The national prep record in the 200 free relay is 1:23.15 by Kingswood High in Texas a decade ago.<\/p>\n
San Pedro was runner-up to two-time champ Pacific Palisades last season and the Pirates would like nothing better than to break their own record and win the title, Nelson added.<\/p>\n
Perhat is a Croatian native who moved to the United States as a child. He is top qualifier in the 100-200 frees (47.18\/1:46.99), races he won last season as a juior.<\/p>\n

Pali senior Cara Davidoff also has thoughts on a title, several actually.
\nThe Dolphin standout is triple defending champ in the 50 free and has won the 100 free twice in the last three seasons. However, she has opted to swim the 200 free and 100 fly this time 'round and is top qualifier in both (1:53.35\/59.40). Pali is also defending City girls' champ.<\/p>\n
Granada Hills senior Steve Park, defending City champ in the 200 individual medley and 100 breast, was top qualifier in both (1:59.13\/ 1:00.71).<\/p>\n
Granada Hills High is the alma mater of former University of Southern California NCAA champ \/Atlanta Olympian Kristine Quance (now Kristine Quance-Julian as she's married to former Trojan butterfly standout Jeff Julian). Quance helped lead Coach Mark Schubert's Women of Troy to their only NCAA Division 1 Championship in 1995 and she still holds the SC record in the 200 breast.<\/p>\n
