MADRID, Spain, May 13. ONLY four finals were swum today, a day when some welcome warmth replaced the near-frigid conditions that had prevailed at the M-86 pool in Madrid. Of the four winners, three were well-known names while the fourth belonged to a newcomer on the international swimming circuit.<\/p>\n
Twenty-one year old Ukrainian Yana Klochkova — double Olympic champion in Sydney and the world record-holder in the 400 IM — swept to victory in the 200 IM in 2:12.56, two-and-a-half seconds ahead of Hanna Shcherba of Belarus (2:15.03). Romania\u2019s Beatrice Coada Caslaru was third (2:15.70).<\/p>\n
The victory was her 10th European title in five years. She has four gold medals in the 200 IM, four in the 400 IM and two in the 400 free. <\/p>\n
"It was a very hard final," Klochkova said, referring more to the weather than the competition. "Swimming outdoors made it very difficult. I'd have swum much better if it had been indoors. I felt confident of winning, however, and I'm happy to retain my title."<\/p>\n
Denis Silantiev, the 1998 world champion, gave Ukraine its second gold medal in two events when he took the men\u2019s 200 fly in 1:56.71. Romania\u2019s Ioan Gherghel, a two-time NCAA champion at Alabama, was sixth at the halfway marka. He was buried in fifth at the final turn, 72-hundredths behind Silantiev, before going to his patented final lap sprint. Had the race been five meters longer, he would have won, but when he hit the pads he fell 11-hundredths shy of the Ukrainian and had to settle for the silver.<\/p>\n
Germany's Stev Theloke, the 1998 and \u201999 champion, regained his crown in the men\u2019s 50 meter backstroke in a furious four-way one-lap scramble. At the end it was Theloke who touched first in 25.61, six-hundredths ahead of Lithuania\u2019s Darius Grigalionis (25.67). Spain\u2019s David Ortega was right behind in 25.69, while Greece\u2019s Aristeidis Grigoriadis, who swam 25.64 in the semis, was a disappointed fourth in 25.71. <\/p>\n
These days Italy seems to be a breaststroke factory, turning out one world class breaststroker after another. This year\u2019s phenomenon is 18 year-old Paolo Bossini, who took the 200 meter race in 2:11.73, just ahead of Russia\u2019s Dimitri Komornikov at 2:12.03. Komornikovc briefly held the world record in this event last year. Richard Bodor of Hungary was third in 2:13.27.<\/p>\n
In semifinal action, Pieter van den Hoogenband was the class of the field in the 200 free, turning in the fastest time, 1:47.58. Kvetoslav Svoboda was a distant second at 1:49.15. <\/p>\n
Defending champion Oleg Lisogor swam the fastest 50 breast in semis, 28.06. Right on his heels is Mark Warnecke, a 34 year-old physician, in 28.15 and France\u2019s Hugues Duboscq in 28.16.<\/p>\n
Martina Moravcova, out to make amends for her disappointing eighth place finish in the 100 free, turened in the fastest 100 fly in semis, 58.67. Poland\u2019s Otylia Jedrzejczak, world record-holder over 200 meters, was second in 59.01.<\/p>\n
In a battle of 17 year-olds, France\u2019s multi-talented Laure Manaudou led the field in the semifinals of the 100m back, touching in 1:01.37, with Russia\u2019s Stanislava Komarova second in 1:01.79. Veteran Nina Zhivanevskaya of Spain had the third-fastest time, 1:01.90<\/p>\n
The 50 breast was relatively slow, but Sweden\u2019s Maria Ostling clocked the events only sub-32, touching in 31.93.<\/p>\n
