FORT LAUDERDALE, April 15. JEFF Erwin pulled off an unusual distance double today, the first day of the YMCA National Masters Short Course Swimming Championships at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Pool in Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n
Competing in the men\u2019s 35-39 age group, the 39 year-old Erwin, representing the Boise, Idaho Y, won the 1650 yard free in a blistering 16:04.27 \u2013 the fastest time of the meet and less than 11 seconds off his own Masters national record. Later he came back and took the 1000 yard free in 9:45.58.<\/p>\n
Erwin was one of five swimmers \u2013 four men and a woman \u2013 who completed the distance sweep.<\/p>\n
Barbara Milanese, West Broward (Fla.) Y, was the meet\u2019s iron woman, winning both events with impressive times. Milanese, 41, took the 1650 in 19:38.77 and the 1000 in 11:50.69.<\/p>\n
Frank McQuiggan, 55, of the Bayside (RI) I swept the men\u2019s 55-59 division with times of 20:32.94 for the metric mile and 12:15.74 for the 40-lapper.
\nIn the 65-69 division, Dave Harrison was The Man, taking the 1650 in 20:59.40 and the 1000 in 12:33.22.<\/p>\n
Battle Creek (Michigan) Y stalwart Don Korten was the oldest swimmer to dominate the distance double with winning times in the 75-79 age group of 30:29.68 and 17:19.69, respectively, for the 1650 and 1000.<\/p>\n
There were other fine swims as well. Betty Lorenzi, 76, of Geneva Lakes, Wisc., was less than 20 seconds off Margery Meyer\u2019s 75-79 record for the metric mile as she recorded a 27:53.63.<\/p>\n
Terry Freerks took the 1650 for women 50-54 in 20:12.49, while Barb Zaremski won the 65-69 division in 26:54.66.<\/p>\n
In the 1000, Kristine Jarecki won the 30-34 age group in 11:31.04 while Nancy Brown took the 65-69 race in 14:57.47.<\/p>\n
For the men, Sarasota\u2019s Mark Drennen was impressive with his 17:02.64 outing for the mile. Teammate Rick Walker was triumphant in the 50-54 age group in 18:24.69, while Neil Brophy, of Geneva, NY, took the 40-44 race in 17:27.41.<\/p>\n
In the 1000, West Broward\u2019s Jonathan Olsen won the 40-44 division in 10:18.98, while Tom Tulenko took the 60-64 battle in 12:33.22.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
