SHEFFIELD, England, April 10. TWO more British records fell at the Olympic trials in Sheffield today in a session that suffered the kind of problems that arise when bureaucrats pander to broadcasters.<\/p>\n
Adrian Turner, one of coach Sean Kelly's heroes at Stockport Metro near
\nManchester, had set a British record of 2:01.58 in the semifinal of the 200 metres medley yesterday. In the final, he raced stroke for stroke
\nalongside Robin Francis, coached by Russian Andrei Vorontsov at Bath
\nUniversity, throughout the battle that took both of them below the British
\nrecord. <\/p>\n
Francis just got the touch in 2:01.06, to Turner's 2:01.16,both times inside the speed needed for a ticket to Athens. Both Francis and Turner have overcome adversity to secure Olympic selection. While illness kept Francis out of action throughout 2002, Turner returned to the sport in
\n2001 after having a life-saving blood transfusion after suffering a serious
\nviral infection. <\/p>\n
After winning two medals at the Commonwealth Games in 2002, Turner broke
\nhis collar bone in a fall. Today he said: "When I fell, my first thought
\nwas 'the Olympics'. I'm very very very happy to be here today qualifying
\nfor my first Games but my first thought is that I was beaten and I don't
\nlike that." <\/p>\n
He did, however, like the thought of being on the same Great Britain
\nOlympic team as his famous brother-in-law, James Cracknell, the Olympic
\nrowing champion.<\/p>\n
Two of his Stockport training partners, James Goddard and Stephen Parry,
\nwere also in great form today, Goddard clocking 55.26sec in the first semi-final of the 100 metres backstroke, just before Gregor Tait fell just 0.05 seconds shy of the British record with a 55.05 effort in the second semi, while Parry will go into the final of the 200 metres butterfly the
\nclear favourite to win after a semi-final time of 1:56.73.<\/p>\n
SMU-based Georgina Lee, coached by Steve Collins, sliced 0.51 seconds off
\nher own national record in the semi-final of the 200 metres butterfly, to
\nqualify clear favourite for the final today in 2:08.89, off a 1:01.68 split. Lee established a British record of 59.45 seconds in the 100
\nmetres yesterday but it is over 200 metres that she can step up to
\n"something special", in the words of Bill Sweetenham, Britain's performance
\ndirector.<\/p>\n
If things in the water in Britain are hugely improved, there is still work to do in the administration of the sport. The requirements of television were allowed to dictate the programme at the trials and, sadly, the BBC was more interested in broadcasting a third-rate tennis duel between Britain and Luxembourg than world-class swimming. <\/p>\n
As such, while there were just four finals on Saturday, Sunday holds the
\nprospect of a dizzying 11 finals, to coincide with broadcast times: about
\nas close to the Olympic programme as Eric the Eel was to a gold medal in Sydney. <\/p>\n
Today, Rebecca Cooke, bronze medal winner at the World Championships in
\nBarcelona last year, raced alone to victory over 800 metres freestyle in
\n8:33.02 to book her place in Athens. The future stepped up for second place in the form of Rebecca Adlington, who turned 15 in February, and in Sheffield axed 13 seconds off her best time to show great promise with an 8:40.80 effort, four seconds shy of the standard she needed for an Olympic team place. Kerri-Anne Payne was third in 8:40.85. <\/p>\n
In the semi-final of the 100 metres freestyle for women, Melanie Marshall
\nwas fastest through in an easy 55.40, while Mark Foster goes into tomorrow's final of the 50 metres freestyle in a supreme positon, with a 22.47sec effort in the semi, an effort that helped to draw Matthew Kidd to
\na best time of 22.70. They must clock 22.42 to qualify for Athens.<\/p>\n
Things are looking up for the Britain men's 4×200 metres freestyle relay
\nfor the first time since the retirement of Paul Palmer, who led the national squad to the European title in 1997. The individual 200 metres was
\nwon by 20-year-old Simon Burnett – coached by Bob Pay at Wycombe District
\nin the Thames Valley – in 1:48.50, good enough for a ticket to Greece in his own right. <\/p>\n
Burnett, a fine technician, raced a second inside Palmer's British
\nrecord pace at 50, 100 and 150 metres but will have to work harder on
\nstamina if he is to match the abilities of the 1996 Olympic silver medal
\nwinner over 400 metres, whose covered the last 50 metres more than 1.5 seconds faster than Burnett on his way to the national record of 1:47.95 to
\nfinish fifth in Sydney 2000.<\/p>\n
Those who followed him home may not race the individual event in Greece but
\nthere is hope of a bright new era for the relay in the respective times of
\n1:49.33, 1:49.44 and 1:49.71 for Ross Davenport, 19, (Bath University),
\nGavin Meadows, 26, (City of Leeds) and David Carry, 22, the senior houseman
\nof the British squad headed by coach Dave Calleja at the offshore centre
\nfor Great Britain on the Gold Coast in Australia. <\/p>\n
There will be no British woman in the 200 metres medley in Athens. The
\nrace was won by Sophie Caul, 18, in 2:16.99, against the 2:14.88 qualification standard. As in so many events in Sheffield, the future looks brighter than the present: second was Lorna Tonks, 15, in 2:17.31, while back in eighth place was 13-year-old Elizabeth Simmonds on 2:20.94. In the semi-final, Simmonds, tall and lanky, clocked 2:19.71.<\/p>\n
Less than 10 minutes later, Simmonds was back in action, clocking a best
\ntime of 2:18.44 over 200 metres backstroke in the next lane to world
\nchampion Katy Sexton, who cruised through to the final tomorrow with a time
\nof 2mins 12.15. Simmonds found herself first reserve for the final after
\nthe second semi in which, Karen Lee clocked in 2:12.91, just ahead of Sarah Price, in 2:13.04, and Joanna Fargus, the 2001 world championship bronze medal winner, in 2:14.<\/p>\n
