SHEFFIELD, England, April 8. MELANIE Marshall was not among the eight swimmers who booked their places on the Great Britain Olympic team at sudden-death trials in Sheffield tonight, but her 1:57.85 British record in the semifinal of the 200 metres freestyle sent the biggest ripples around the swimming world than anything else on offer.<\/p>\n

On a night when six British standards fell in the race to clock Olympic
\ntarget times equivalent to 12th fastest in the world last year, Marshall's
\neffort, a little over a second outside German Franziska van Almsick's
\nremarkable world record, shone like a beacon — not of hope but of expectation.<\/p>\n

She must repeat the performance again tomorrow to ensure her place in Athens but will start the final safe in the knowledge that she is one of only four current competitors ever to have raced below 1:58 over 200 metres.<\/p>\n

"That was a terrific swim" said Bill Sweetenham, the national
\nperformance director, who added that six British records and eight
\nqualifiers represented "a good night, not great, just good".<\/p>\n

Marshall, 22 and coached by Ben Titley at Loughborough University, missed the Commonwealth record held by Olympic champion Susie O'Neill, the retired Australian, by just 0.38 seconds. She will try again tomorrow as she bids to join Ian Edmond, Katy Sexton and Alison Sheppard – who in Athens will be the first British swimmer ever to attend five Olympic Games – on the list of medal contenders bound for Greece.<\/p>\n

Relief was etched on Edmond's face like one of Picasso's finest as he
\nrevealed that qualification for an Olympic Games at which he is one of
\nBritain's top medal hopes had hung in the balance. With Chris Cook, second
\nman home and also inside Olympic target time over 200 metres breaststroke,
\nlying prone on the deck nearby, chest heaving like bellows in a boiler
\nroom, the tension draining from him as the colour slowly returned to his
\ncheeks, Edmond said he had spent last week "in bed sick taking antibiotics
\nfor an ear infection". He was still able to clock 2:11.87 to Cook's
\n2:12.87.<\/p>\n

Katy Sexton, the first British woman to win a world title when she
\ntriumphed over 200 metres backstroke last year, led Sarah Price home in
\nthe sprint event last night, their times — 1:01.16 and 1:01.61 — inside the target time, though outside their best. <\/p>\n

With a 25.23 second victory over 50 metres freestyle, Sheppard, coached by
\nhusband Gary ven der Meulen, third fastest in the world last year, was 0.55 seconds outside her best, but was 0.16 seconds inside the qualifying time. If she was delighted to make her fifth Games, then 20-year-old Todd Cooper, coached by American Chris Martin, felt "pretty fantastic" to have qualified for his first with a British record of 52.46 in the 100 metres butterfly.<\/p>\n

Cooper, who trains in the same pool in Stirling as Sheppard, defeated
\nJames Hickman, the man whose record he took, but the former record holder,
\nwho will quit the sport at the end of this year, will also compete in
\nAthens after racing inside his previous best, in 52.79. Cooper, said
\nSweetenham was a "great, great prospect".<\/p>\n

In the women's 100 metres butterfly, Georgina Lee, 22, coached by Steve
\nCollins at SMU in Dallas, Texas, lowered her own British record by 0.29 seconds with a time of 59.45, just 0.03 inside the Olympic target. She was
\nthe only qualifier.<\/p>\n

There were also British records for Rebecca Cooke, Kirsty Balfour and
\nJames Goodard. Cooke's 4:46.79 victory over 400 metres medley, while
\nfalling shy of her Olympic target, shaved 0.04 seconds off the oldest-standing British record, which had been held by Sharron Davies since she won the silver medal at the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980. Goddard clocked 1:58.58 over 200 metres backstroke and Balfour, Edmond's training partner,
\n2:27.88 over 200 metres breaststroke.<\/p>\n

There will be no British man in the 100 metres freestyle in Athens. Matthew
\nKidd's 49.72 was not good enough to qualify, while the combined times of
\nKidd, who trains at Auburn, and the three who followed him home do not add
\nup to eighth best in the world, the standard required by Sweetenham.<\/p>\n
