SHEFFIELD, England, April 7. THEY are not nearly as swift as the great Ian Thorpe but at least Adam Faulkner and Graeme Smith did not fall off their starting blocks and can therefore be sure of racing over 400 metres freestyle in Athens this summer after earning the first two berths on the Great Britain Olympic team in Sheffield tonight. <\/p>\n

On the first of five days of trials, Faulkner, coached by Bill Furniss of
\nNottingham, claimed victory in 3:49.97, a personal best time by more than a second and 0.24sec ahead of Smith, coached by Sean Kelly at Stockport Metro, who held off Davies, coached by Dave Haller in Cardiff, third in 3:50.35, a Welsh record.<\/p>\n

All three raced inside the British qualifying time for Athens, which equates to 12th fastest in the world last year, but Davies's hopes now rest
\non qualification over 1,500 metres freestyle at the weekend.<\/p>\n

A delighted Faulkner believed that some way would be found to ensure that Thorpe will indeed race over 400 metres in Athens and a "credible" result would be witnessed. Smith was disappointed with his time, 0.81sec outside best, but relieved to have qualified. "The pressure here is worse
\nthan at the Olympics because…12 years of work could be wiped out here if
\nyou don't make it."<\/p>\n

Among six semi-finals, only one produced efforts inside Olympic
\nqualification standards, Ian Edmond, on 2:12.12, and Chris Cook, on
\n2:13.52, promising great things for tomorrow's final of the 200 metres breaststroke, in which they must reproduce their times for their efforts to count towards selection. <\/p>\n

Katy Sexton, world champion over 200 metres backstroke, and Sarah Price
\nproved themselves a class apart to qualify for the final of the 100 metres
\nin 1:01.70 and 1:01.95, rspectively.<\/p>\n

In the absence of any noteworthy competition, Alison Sheppard, coached by
\nformer Canadian medley swimmer and husband Gary Van der Meulen, cruised into the final of the 50 metres freestyle in 25.47sec.<\/p>\n

The men's 100 metres butterfly saw an old rivalry rekindled, James Hickman, better know for his short-course exploits, clocked 53.14 seconds to the 53.80 best time of Stephen Parry, the 200-metre specialist.<\/p>\n

Three British records were set in the morning heats but not one of them
\nproduced an Olympic qualifying time. Rosalind Brett, of Loughborough
\nUniversity, became the first British woman ever to break the minute over
\n100 metres fly but her new national standard of 59.84 seconds lasted just
\ntwo minutes as Georgina Lee, who had held the record at 1:00.24 since
\nApril last year, improved to 59.72. Later in the semifinal, Lee clocked
\n59.74, with Brett on 1:00.02.<\/p>\n

Lee is coached by Steve Collins at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.<\/p>\n

The men's 100 metres freestyle, long a weakness in Britain, saw Matthew Kidd, coached in the United States by David Marsh of Auburn University, shave 0.07 seconds off his own British record, in 49.65. In the semifinal, Simon Burnett, 21 next week, became only the third British man to race inside 50 seconds, clocking 49.90 to Kidd's 49.99. It is 28 years since Jim Montgomery, of the US, became the first man to break 50 seconds, on his way to being crowned Olympic champion in 1976.<\/p>\n

Bill Sweetenham, Britain's Performance Director, said: "None of those
\nrecords are inside the Olympic qualifying standard we've set, so we can't
\nbe happy with them. There better be some serious reaching for socks
\ntomorrow."<\/p>\n
