AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, April 3. PAWEL Korzeniowski highlighted the
\nthird day of the Amsterdam Swim Cup with a Polish record in the 200 fly.
\nHe clocked 1:56.89, a body length ahead of Ioannis Drymonakos who turned first after the 100 mark. The Greek swam 1:58.59, enough to beat Lukasz Drzewinski from Poland (2:01.19), in by far the strongest field ever in The Netherlands in this event.<\/p>\n
The Dutch stars were also present in Amsterdam, since this competition and
\nthe Nationals in two weeks are the only meets left to qualify for the
\nOlympics. Pieter van den Hoogenband has his ticket already, but he cruised to 49.07 to win the 100 meter freestyle.<\/p>\n
No other Dutch swimmers could follow the Olympic champion, only Russia's Denis Pimankow could reach his feet. Pimankow, who grabbed gold in Barcelona with his relay team in the 4×100 freestyle, clocked 50.27 in Amsterdam. Mark Veens swam 50.21 in the prelims, but he tore his suit
\nduring the finals and finished fifth in 50.86.<\/p>\n
The 400 IM had an international top 8, with Lukasz Wojt finishing first
\nfor Poland in 4:20.95. Teammate Pawel Korzeniowski followed with Ioannis
\nDrymonakos from Greece, the numbers one and two from the 200 fly. The Greek
\nwon this time, clocking 4:23.53 to 4:26.50 for Korzeniowski.<\/p>\n
The 50 backstroke had a close finish, Marco di Carli from Dirk Lange's team
\nfrom Germany touched first in 26.03, only 0.07 seconds ahead of David Ortega from Spain who led from the start.<\/p>\n
The women's finals saw a clash between Inge de Bruijn and Marleen Veldhuis.
\nDe Bruijn hasn't been beaten since the Europeans in 1999, but Veldhuis came
\nvery close today in the 50 meter freestyle. Both women swam side-by-side in
\nthe freestyle sprint, but it was De Bruijn's experience that gave her the
\nmagic to touch first in 24.80, to the 24.96 of Veldhuis.<\/p>\n
Inky is training seriously again for only five months now, so the 100
\nfreestyle tomorrow is going to be a real test case for the triple Olympic
\nchampion. Therese Alshammar is focusing on this sprint event for the
\nOlympics and finished third in 25.45.<\/p>\n
Moniek Nijhuis won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.53, far ahead of the rest of the field. She swam a National Junior record and just missed qualifying for the Olympics by 0.68 seconds. Other winners were Marianna Limpert in the 800 freestyle (8:51.61) and Katarzyna Staszak (2:17.11) in the 200
