RALEIGH Swimming Association is starting to pull away in the combined team competition at the NCSA Junior Nationals, with Curl-Burke and Arizona Desert Fox running in second and third. Matt McGinnis helped his team’s cause, winning two more individual events and anchoring another RSA relay.

The NCSA Junior Nationals conclude tomorrow at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando.

Women’s 200 Free:
Conejo Simi’s 100 free champ Kara Denby was first in the water with Chelsea Nauta, Natalie Pike, Jill Courtney and Austen Carter closing the gap by the 50 turn. By the 100 yard mark, all five girls were still together with Carter, who was in the hunt for last night’s 500 until she lost her goggles at the 175. At the halfway turn she began to make her move with Natalie Pike not far behind. Carter used some great last 50 speed to pull away from the field for good, finishing in 1:48.49, winning by a full second. Denby made her move late in the race to close in on second place in 1:49.49, Jill Courtney was third in 1:49.96, Pike faded to fourth in the final five yards to finish one hundredth back in 1:49.97.

Men’s 200 Free:
The first men’s race of the evening saw the distance ace of the meet so far, John Koehler of the Dayton Raiders, the 100 Free and 100 back champion and anchor of all of the RSA winning relays, Matt McGinnis, and 500 free and 400 IM runner-up Brooks Stovall battling it out. McGinnis and Stovall, coming off of quick starts and great first 25s, led the field into the first turn, with Koehler a tenth back. As the first 100 progressed, McGinnis continued to push the field, turning at a 47.93 100 split with Stovall not too far back at 48.17, and Jacob Johnson, from Wildcat Aquatics in lane 1, 48.45. But no swimmer in the field could handle McGinnis’ powerful second half. He came home in 48.44, touching in 1:36.37, Stovall was a body-length behind at 1:38.65 and Johnson third in 1:39.73.

Women’s 200 Back:
Katie Fritsch, from Bernal’s Gator Swim Club used some great underwater work, pushing to the 15 meter limit off the start and halfway down the pool off the first turn to break ahead of the field. But as Fritsch’s kickouts got shorter, the field, namely Curl-Burke’s Yeng Lan Beller, closed the gap and pushed by Fritsch. Then it was Beller who pulled away, keeping her kickouts long and consistent, going sometimes a yard farther than the field off the walls and finishing with nearly a two body length lead into the finish, touching at 1:58.43, Stacey Nedrund of Cocoa Beach Swim Club was second in 2:00.68 and Beller’s Curl-Burke teammate, Mei Christensen was third from lane 1 in 2:01.54.

Men’s 200 Back:
Showing no fatigue from his 200 free only a few minutes earlier, Matt McGinnis came back to dominate his second event of the evening. With quick first 50s, AFOX’s Alex Righi and Rockville-Montgomery’s Josh Hafkin led the field. The field closed in on them by the 100 mark and McGinnis made his move at the same place as in the 200 free, during the fifth length of the race, as he opened up his lead to over a body-length. During the next three lengths, McGinnis would dominate the field, touching first in 1:46.06. 400 IM champion, North Jeffco’s Russell Payne was second in 1:48.64, and Memphis Tigers’ Keith Laabs finished third in 1:49.91.

Women’s 200 Free Relay:
The first leg saw Bernal’s Gators and Raleigh Swimming Association out with a quick 50, with Team Greenville not far behind. There really were no lead changes throughout the race, the leaders from the start kept pushing the pace and pulling away from the field. RSA pulled away from Conejo Simi on each relay exchange touching first in 1:33.54, Conejo Simi was second in 1:34.90 and Team Greenville was third in 1:36.18.

Men’s 200 Free Relay:
Leading into the race, it seemed that we would see a rematch from last night’s 400 free relay final with Raleigh Swimming Association, Memphis Tiger, and Arizona Desert Fox with Magnus looking to bounce back from last night’s DQ. RSA would go on to dominate the field giving Matt McGinnis a big lead that he definitely didn’t need to finish first in 1:24.14, Magnus gave chase close behind, touching second in 1:25.07.
