DAY Three of the NCSA Junior Nationals saw some fast swimming at the YMCA Aquatic Center with numerous top performances by both Raleigh Swimming Association’s Matt McGinnis and Memphis Tigers' Gil Stovall. There are two days of the meet remaining, with the meet concluding on Friday night.

The biggest solo performance of the evening was the breaking of the oldest 15-16 National Age Group Record on the books. John Moffet’s 1981 record of 1:59.33 was passed by more than a second by Blue Tide Aquatics’ Paul Kornfeld, swimming a 1:58.14. Kornfeld is Coached by Steve Wilson.

Women’s 100 Freestyle:
A three way race between Conejo Simi’s Kara Denby, Team Greenville’s Austen Carter and Unattached-Palo Alto’s Brooke Bishop. Bishop took the early lead over the pack at the first two turns, but after some great momentum by Denby and Carter, the gap was closed by the last turn. Bishop held on until the final breakout, when Kara Denby took over and finished in 50.04. With a great last 10 yards and finish, Carter snuck in ahead of Bishop for the silver just .02 ahead of Bishop (50.29 and 50.31 respectively).

Men’s 100 Freestyle:
At the 25 and 50 turns, it was a three-way race between Rockbridge’s William Copeland, RSA’s Matt McGinnis and GPAC’s Daniel Penniman for the men’s 100 free final. McGinnis, who had a phenomenal final leg on the RSA 800 free relay on Monday night (1:35.41) held steady until the third 25, when he took off and left the field in his dust. McGinnis’ second 50 won the race for him by nearly a full second. McGinnis finished in 44.36, Copeland was second in 45.32 and Penniman third in 45.76.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke:
The race was between Foxjet’s Alicia Jensen and this summer’s NCSA champion, Middies’ Jackie Pangilinan. The girls had nearly a body length lead on the field by the 75 mark, with Jensen pushing hard to break away from Pangilman on the 3rd 50. Jensen would keep moving ahead to finish in 2:13.01, a new NCSA Junior National Record, and .89 ahead of second-place finisher Jackie Pangilinan (2:13.90).

Men’s 200 Breaststroke:
Southern Crescent’s Billy Jamerson led early and hard, taking the field for a ride and pushing Blue Tide’s Paul Kornfeld to break from the pack. Jamerson would have the lead at the 100 with an extremely fast 56.79 split. Kornfield had a slight lead at the 150 mark and made a big move on the 50 breaststroke champion, Jamerson, and had nearly a body-length lead at the 175. Kornfield powered into the wall with a 1:58.14 breaking a 13-year old NAG mark, Jamerson was second with a 2:01.31.

Kornfield's Splits: 27.14 – 57.29 (30.15) – 1:27.80 (30.51) – 1:58.14 (30.34)

Women’s 50 Butterfly:
It was anyone’s race at the 25, and even at 45 yards there were four girls still in the race. It came down to who would time her finish the best. Stephanie Glover of the Raleigh Swim Association came to the pad first in 25.11.

Men’s 50 Butterfly:
The 200 butterfly champion from last night, Gil Stovall of Memphis Tiger Swimming tested the sprint fly distance and after a long kickout off the turn, broke out and took off. Stovall finished well ahead of the field in 23.31.

Women’s 100 Back:
YAC’s Megan Wheeler led the whole way, with Bernal Gator’s Katie Fritsch giving chase off each wall with superb breakouts and underwater work. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome Wheeler’s surface tempo, Wheeler won in a 54.65, Fritsch was second in 55.90 and Curl-Burke’s Mei Christensen was third in 56.45.

Men’s 100 Back:
At the 50 turn it was a race between the butterfly champion Stovall, and Rockville Montgomery’s Josh Hafkin with RSA’s Matt McGinnis not far behind. By the 75, McGinnis made up the gap, making it a three way tie. McGinnis had a great third turn, and carried the momentum to the wall with a big 49.67 win. Stovall was second in 49.75, and Keith Laabs was third, making it 2-3 for the Memphis Tigers. In the preliminaries, AFOX’s Alex Righi went past the 15 meter mark, leading to his disqualification; however he time-trialed the 100 back this afternoon, posting an extremely fast 49.10.

Women’s 500 Freestyle:
Curl-Burke’s Sarah Baker became the race’s first leader at the 150 mark with a higher tempo than the rest of the field, bringing North Coast’s Britany Allen along for the ride, with LAKE’s Nikki White and Springfield’s Katie Brosseau about 2 yards back.

Allen took a slight lead at the 450 bell but Baker made up the difference by the 475 turn, and they would finish a hair apart with Allen winning in 4:52.96 and Baker second in 4:53.01. Team Greenville’s Austen Carter, the evening’s top seed lost her goggles and swam backstroke to put them back on at the 175 turn, but battled back into seventh place in 5:01.47.

Men’s 500 Freestyle:
John Koehler, the 1000 champion from Monday night, came into finals with a 3 second advantage over the field, swimming unchallenged in prelims with a 4:27.87 and immediately got into the position he has been in all week — the lead — swimming his first 100 in 49.85 with Memphis Tiger’s Brooks Stovall constantly at his waist. Stovall made a run at the lead at the 400 mark, but Koehler responded with another gear, took off and finished first in 4:25.54, Stovall finished second in 4:26.31.

Women’s 400 Free Relay:
The early speed of the Raleigh Swim Association gave them a quick lead with Curl-Burke and Conejo Simi giving chase. RSA’s girls would get a big lead on the first 25 of each 100 and would hold it for the whole four lengths. With 100 yards to go, Conejo Simi, Curl-Burke and AFOX were all two body-lengths behind battling for second, with RSA winning by more than 3 seconds in 3:24.11. Conejo Simi finished second in 3:27.43, Curl-Burke third in 3:28.16, AFOX fourth in 3:28.89.

Men’s 400 Free Relay
The men’s relay started out as an All-Memphis affair, with the Raleigh Swim Association and AFOX not far behind. The RSA made up the gap by the 250 mark and had nearly a body-length lead over AFOX at the final relay transition. But who was the RSA anchor? 100 free champion Matt McGinnnis, who would crush the field with a 44.02 final split to finish first in 3:02.98. AFOX was second in 3:07.84, and Memphis Tiger third in 3:08.63.

NCSA Junior Nationals Results:
Day 3
Orlando, FL

Event 7 Women 100 Yard Freestyle
===============================================================================
JR RECORD: J 49.69 2002 Cait A Connealy – AFOX
, AFOX
Name Age Team Semis Finals Points
===============================================================================
A – Final
1 Denby, Kara J 17 Conejo Simi-CA 50.46 50.04 20
24.14 50.04 (25.90)
2 Carter, Austen L 17 TG-SC 50.85 50.29 17
24.24 50.29 (26.05)
3 Bishop, Brooke A 17 UNPAS-PC 50.55 50.31 16
23.80 50.31 (26.51)
4 Smith, Julie P 14 Rsa-NC 51.06 50.90 15
23.96 50.90 (26.94)
5 Nichols, Christine E 16 CUBU-PV 51.38 51.01 14
24.91 51.01 (26.10)
6 Nauta, Chelsea B 15 Tbay-FL 51.47 51.27 13
24.83 51.27 (26.44)
7 Pike, Natalie N 18 Unfast-FG 51.63 51.31 12
24.80 51.31 (26.51)
8 Raatz, Katherine A 15 ArizonaDesertFox-AZ 51.49 51.79 11
25.01 51.79 (26.78)
B – Final
9 Noland, Katherine O 17 Pst-FG 52.14 51.53 9
25.10 51.53 (26.43)
10 Long, Teresa C 13 Rsa-NC 51.63 51.75 7
25.14 51.75 (26.61)
11 Braun, Megan 15 FOXJ-MN 51.83 51.97 6
25.11 51.97 (26.86)
12 Shishkoff, Kassia N 15 Rsa-NC 52.00 52.38 5
25.62 52.38 (26.76)
13 Smiddy, Susan E 13 Metro A of Miami-FG 52.10 52.59 4
25.16 52.59 (27.43)
14 Marshall, Christine I 17 Coast Guard-VA 51.89 52.63 3
25.34 52.63 (27.29)
15 Wesley, Jenna C 16 North Coast-SI 51.87 52.97 2
25.58 52.97 (27.39)
16 Glover, Stephanie L 18 Rsa-NC 51.74 53.81 1
25.75 53.81 (28.06)

Event 8 Men 100 Yard Freestyle
===============================================================================
JR RECORD: J 44.45 3/23/2004 Matt W McGinnis, RSA
Name Age Team Semis Finals Points
===============================================================================
A – Final
1 McGinnis, Matt W 18 Rsa-NC 44.45 44.36J 20
21.53 44.36 (22.83)
2 Copeland, William F 17 Rockbridge Swimm 46.05 45.32 17
21.45 45.32 (23.87)
3 Penniman, Daniel L 17 GPAC-SE 46.04 45.67 16
21.62 45.67 (24.05)
4 Davydotchkin, Philipp A 17 makos-GA 45.97 45.85 15
22.07 45.85 (23.78)
5 Forbes, Alexander K 16 Cent.
