ON Day 2 of the NCSA Junior Nationals you might as well call the men’s 200 fly the "200 Stovall." Gil Stovall of the Memphis Tiger Swim Club swam a dominant 200 fly, dropping the field at the 75 mark and not looking back, finishing in 1:44.91. Stovall was the reigning NCSA Champion in the 200 fly and lowered his own NCSA Junior National record (1:46.59 in 2003) by nearly two seconds. Stovall’s Coach, David Smith said "It was a great race. What more can I say?" Stovall will be attending the University of Georgia next year.

Stovall’s Splits: 23.41 – 50.05 (26.64) – 1:17.25 (27.20) – 1:44.91 (27.66)

For the women’s 200 fly, it was all Elizabeth Shaw of Nova of Virginia. The 15-year old was with the pack for a 50, then took off, lengthening her lead off of each wall and stuffing the field with a 1:00.58 second 100. Shaw finished in 1:58.25, nearly 3 seconds ahead of the field. Curl-Burke’s Yen Lan Beller finished second in 2:01.09, pulling away in the final 50 from Shaw’s Nova teammate Danielle LeClair (3rd – 2:01.25).

In the women’s 50 breast, Kara Denby of Conejo Simi led the whole way to touch first in 29.25, a new NCSA Junior National record. Kara had the field beat with the longest pullouts off both walls. Industry Hill’s Maryann Boosalis touched second in 29.84 and 14-year old Samantha Maxwell of Tempe Rio Salado touched third in 29.98.

For the men’s 50 breast, Southern Crescent’s Billy Jamerson won in much the same fashion as the women, overpowering the field with his pullouts and pushed into the wall to finish first in 25.63. Jamerson’s coach, Jamey Myers said of Jamerson’s race: "He did better than the semis, but I think he could have gone 25 low, rather than 25 mid."

The women’s 400 IM was a dead heat with Magnus’ Kathleen Foley trying to break at the 250 mark, making a small lead going into the freestyle. But it was Springfield’s Kaite Brosseau who would power by Foley during the first length of the freestyle leg. The race was for second with Nova’s (VA) Elizabeth Shaw and Industry Hill’s Abby Miller closing in on Brosseau and Foley but ran out of room. Brosseau finished first in 4:20.41, Foley second in 4:21.51, and Shaw finished close in third in 4:21.63.

The men’s 400 IM was led early by Memphis Tiger Brooks Stovall (brother of 200 fly champ Gil Stovall) who had a good lead at the 100, and had it chipped away by North Jeffco’s (Colorado) Russel Payne (3:54.59p). Payne would be a few tenths behind Stovall at the 200 touch, but after a phenomenal transition from back to breast would rocket Payne into the lead, and would have an arm’s length lead at the 225. Payne powered ahead to what seemed to be an insurmountable lead after the breaststroke, but Stovall made a big run at his lead, making up nearly a half second per length. But Stovall would run out of room, and Payne would touch first at 3:54.50 to Stovall’s 3:55.14.

The women’s 200 medley relay saw numerous lead changes until Raleigh Swimming Association’s Amanda Duncan’s fly leg. Duncan closed out her 50 fly better than anyone in the field giving their freestyler enough room to finish with the win in 1:44.34, a new NCSA Junior National record.

The men’s 200 medley relay was a battle of the outside lanes, with Magnus in lane 2, Raleigh Swim Association in lane 3 and Memphis Tiger in lane 8. The RSA would jump out to an early backstroke leg with the Magnus breaststroker closed in on the lead at the 100 mark. The Memphis Tigers closed in on the lead with a quick fly leg making it a three team race for the lead. Magnus would come back to win in 1:34.16 with a quick closing freestyle bringing RSA (2nd – 1:34.31) and North Jeffco in lane 1 along for the ride (4th – 1:35.66). Third place went to the Bend Swim Club, swimming from the previous heat in 1:35.42.

Results: Day 2
NCSA Junior Nationals
Orlando, FL

Event 5 Women 50 Yard Breaststroke
===============================================================================
JR RECORD: #
