200 meter breaststroke<\/b>
\nCOLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 20. THE 200 breaststroke boasted the deepest field of this spectacular meet: Stanford\u2019s Tara Kirk, the two-time defending champion and new 100 meter world record-holder; ASU\u2019s Agnes Kovacs, the defending 2000 Olympic and 2001 world champion; and three potential German Olympians in top qualifier Birte Steven, Oregon State; Georgia\u2019s Sarah Poewe; and Florida\u2019s Vipa Bernhardt.<\/p>\n
Kirk decided to end all doubt, jumping out front at the 50 in 31.56 seconds, 8-tenths ahead of Steven, her nearest pursuer. Then she just kept going.<\/p>\n
She was 1:07.54 at the 100, and 1:44.36 at the 150 \u2013 both under Amanda Beard\u2019s American record pace.<\/p>\n
There was no stopping Captain Kirk. She powered home to win in 2:20.70, erasing Kristy Kowal\u2019s NCAA standard of 2:22.05 from 2000, Amanda Beard\u2019s American record of 2:21.42 from \u201902, and Japan\u2019s Masami Tanaka\u2019s 2:21.20 from earlier this year.<\/p>\n
How dominant was she? <\/p>\n
Kirk had the fastest split for every 50 meter split. At no time was anyone in the race ever gaining on her!<\/i><\/p>\n
