1500 meter freestyle<\/b>
\nCOLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 20. THE team race is all but decided. It would take an act of God to deprive the Auburn Tigers of their third straight national collegiate crown. At a team meeting before this evening\u2019s finals, the team and coaches had an emotional bonding session then marched out ready to \u201chave fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tonight\u2019s first final is the 1500 meters freestyle. In an earlier heat, Georgia sophomore Laura Conway busted a move, hitting the pads in 16:00.70 \u2013 a new NCAA record, breaking Cara Lane\u2019s 16:03.59 from 2000.<\/p>\n

But the final heat has some tough milers contending for the crown. USC freshman Kalyn Keller has to be considered the favorite. Other contenders: Florida\u2019s Sara McLarty, Auburn\u2019sAdrienne Binder and Virginia\u2019s Rachael Burke and Kimi Kelly, Keller is shooting for the win as well as the 21 year-old American record of 15:50.96 by Kim Linehan.<\/p>\n

Keller takes off and swims consistently just under Linehan\u2019s record pace right from the start, splitting 1:03s for every 100 except the first (1:01.53), 14th (1:04.01) and last (1:02.67). At the wall, Keller \u2013 the younger sister of 2000 Olympian Klete Keller \u2013the scoreboard reads 15:49.14 \u2013 a new American record and the second fastest time in history.<\/p>\n

Burke is second in 15:55.27, and McLarty third in 16:01.29. But Conway\u2019s time from the previous heat is faster and she takes the bronze.<\/p>\n
