400 meter individual medley<\/b>
\nCOLLEGE STATION, Texas, March 19. THE 400 IM figured to be a battle among USC\u2019s Kaitlin Sandeno, Arizona\u2019s Emily Mason and Auburn\u2019s Kirsty Coventry.<\/p>\n
Sandeno quickly turned the battle into a rout, as she slashed the NCAA record (4:33.46), US Open record (4:33.44) and American record (4:31.76) with a brilliant 4:30.44. The records she broke were not your usual run of records either. The US Open mark was set by Tracy Caulkins in 1981 and had lasted 23 years, while the American record was set by Allison Wagner in 1993.<\/p>\n
The USC junior was only 3-hundredths off Yana Klochkova\u2019s world record pace after the breaststroke, but was unable to match the Ukrainian\u2019s blistering final freestyle leg.<\/p>\n
Coventry was second in 4:34.20 while Mason finished in 4:35.38.<\/p>\n
