TWENTY-FOUR swimmers from Holland High School won the Michigan boys Division 1 state championship Saturday afternoon at the University of Michigan's Donald B. Canham Natatorium.

According to Dutch coach Jon Shears, however, that championship belongs to many more. "There were 24 people in the water today, but everyone in this building from Holland was helping us hold up that trophy," Shears said after the Dutch raised the state championship trophy and then took a celebratory plunge. "It takes a team and families to win a championship like this."

Holland, which had been ranked No. 1 throughout most of the season, won the state championship with 264 points. Ann Arbor Pioneer, which led throughout most of the competition, finished second with 252 points.
Zeeland finished fourth, with 163 and West Ottawa was fifth (150).

Holland trailed Ann Arbor Pioneer until Dutch senior Grant Burtch won the 11th of the 12 events, the 100-yard breaststroke.

Holland led the Pioneers by six points entering the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, so had the Dutch finished second to the Pioneers in the final event, the two teams would have shared the state title. But
Holland's Chaz VanderBroek, Brendon Ray, Adam DeJong and Evan Kobes won the 400 free relay with a state record time of 3:09.40.

"We knew (after Friday's preliminaries) that we would be down going into the 200 free relay," Shears said.

After they finished second to Ann Arbor Pioneer last year, the Dutch did not want a tie.

"I have tied too many times," Shears said. "Our program has been building for the last five or six years and now, this is where we have wanted to be. We talked to these seniors when they were freshman and we said that they could be state champions some day. If you trust, anything is possible."

Holland opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay as Kobes, Burtch, Josh Hoag and Jon Kortman won with a Division 1 record time of 1:34.40. Kobes also won the 100 backstroke, with a time of 50.80 seconds.

Jenison senior Nick Walkotten won a pair of state championships Saturday, as did Grand Haven senior Adam Schmitt. Walkotten won the 200 individual medley in 1:52.36 and the 100 butterfly in 50.32.

"Winning is not always important, as long as you swim your best and I swam well today," Walkotten said.

Schmitt won the 50 free with a Division 1 record time of 21.01 seconds and the 100 free with another record: 45.97.

"I broke 46 (seconds) for the first time in the 100," Schmitt said. "That was a goal of mine. In my 50 I wanted to go under 21 seconds.

DIVISION 2:
Birmingham Groves High School won the boys Division 2 swimming and diving championships on Saturday at Eastern Michigan University.

Lakeview won the 200 freestyle relay (Kurti, OBrien, Weathers, Cole) in 1:27.89; Stephen Schlatter, East Grand Rapids, finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 59.81; Philip Heyboer, Holland Christian, finished second in the 500 freestyle in 4:38.98; Heyboer also took second in the 100 backstroke in 53.43.

— Kelly Hill
The Grand Rapids Press

2004 MHSAA BOYS DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPS – 3/12/04 to 3/13/04
Team Rankings – Through Event 12
Male Team Scores
Place School Points
1 Holland High School HOLL 264
2 Ann Arbor Pioneer High School AAP 252
3 Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice BBR 201
4 Zeeland High School ZHSB 163
5 West Ottawa High School WOHS 150
6 Midland H.
